New BMXmuseum Map Feature

New BMXmuseum Map Feature
I finally got around to (somewhat) finishing the Map page:
http://bmxmuseum.com/map/
It's still in early stages, but it's functional. Things missing and/or that will improve:
* Ability to add photos to a spot (saving this for a rainy day)
* Ability to edit your spot (you can delete it and add it again now...)
* Not reloading the page when you add or delete a spot (pretty easy to set up, just a bit time consuming)
* Just making it a bit more elegant w/ searching and adding spots (again it works, it's just clunky)
X Custom icons for each type of spot (done)
* Showing list of spots on map in left column after search (or most recent on initial page load?)
X Improving performance on Internet Exploder 6 (done. tho I do loathe this browser and plead folks to upgrade to the 21st century (seriously!) with Firefox or Opera or Safari, but I know a lot of people still use it, for whatever unholy reason that makes our web developer life hell)
Give it a shot.. I added the Burnside Skate Park and the Grotto trail my brother rode last time he visited.
I'll remove this as a sticky and add MAP to the main nav after a few peeps give it a test run and make sure it works ok.
Open to suggestions.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
Awesome job, Nate!!!!!!!!!
Along the lines of what jjvh66 said, maybe on the left underneath "My Bikes", "My Posts", etc. (which appears after you've logged in), you could put something like "My Map Locations"? And add it to each member's profile along with favorites, feedback, posts, send PM, etc.
Going back to what jjvh66 said, put it in a bold red font underneath "FORUMS".
Sorry for the extra work Nate. Just a couple of suggestions. And thanks for making such a user friendly site!!!! ![]()

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
@jjvh66: I was thinking it would be a larger red link under "FORUMS", as it will be a main section once the kinks are ironed out.
when i get more time to play with it, i think the first thing would be to add a list of all the types of spots w/ custom icons and checkboxes to filter them on the map -- instead of having the dropdown list to search user-submitted spots. as more spots are added (which is happening pretty fast! awesome to see), it will quickly get muddy & confusing.
@comay: definitely, i was thinking this exactly -- having the ability to load the map w/ just one user's spots (e.g. /map/?user=comay) and linking to it from the profiles and in the login box.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
allright this is trippy...
if I just double click the grey area where the map is supposed to be, it draws some random section of the world, then I can move around and zoom in and what not. But the first time I try to display the map, all I get is grey.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
@saylor: yeah, that's the exact problem i had with IE, and why i wrote this:
i did try setting it to wait a tenth of a second before initializing the map with spots (this is the type of stuff that makes catering to IE6 a pain in the arse and a big ol' waste of time, since it's a SIX (!) year old browser, and there are a ton of great FREE alternatives to use, see links above, hint hint) -- and that fixed it for me on IE6. a workaround that also works is to just hit the "Search!" button and it will redraw the map for you.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
Not saying that it's better than the others Nate mentioned, but I'm using IE7 and the map works fine for me.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
I added a few local spots. But the satellite map doesn't work. THIS would be a HUGH help. You can actually see what your looking for. The map for my area doesn't show all the roads 62901.
EDITED: it does work I just have to double click the grey box.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
@skinnygmg: yeah, that's definitely on my list for improvements in the next wave of working on it:
* Showing list of spots on map in left column after search (or most recent on initial page load?)
i just wanted to get it functional enough for you guys to add spots and get some feedback on how best to navigate the data once it's in there! this would be a big improvement as a first step.

Re: New BMXmuseum Map Feature
it had been touched on but diff color markers for diff things
like :
red member location
blue bike shop
green track
with them all being the same color i can see how this would get confusing
and very crammed after a few days the continent will be covered in red markers ![]()
