Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

I got my first real bike a Candy Apple Red 1980 Team Mongoose, had the bike shop swap out the rims for some black tuff wheel 2's and a set of Mongoose pads. I got the bike from Stadium Bike on Stadium Blvd in Ann Arbor Mi for $350.00. I think it cost $300.00 without the tuff's and pads.

Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

My first was a 1980 Redline with redline bars, brute stem, skyway mags, oakley grips...and I got it used off a kid who turned 18 for 40 bucks. Then a year later my bud stole the bike from me, stripped the paint and had the nerve to try and sell it back to me!

Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

I remember my parents saw a guy on the side of a road in a parking lot selling BMX bikes in about 1985. I remember barely being able to touch the ground with my feet. I don't remember where they bought my brothers DiamondBack Viper which he got around the same time. I think it was from the bike shop down the street from us.

My first BMX was a black/gold Huffy from Meijer.  It wasn't a Pro Thunder, but Something Thunder.

My first good bike was an 88 Diamond Back Reactor that I bought used.

Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

My first real BMX Bike was bought by my Grandparents in 1985 , I was almost 10 years old . It was a Chrome 1985 GT Mach One . They new I had a crappy Huffy and decided to help my Parents out and buy me the bike for Christmas . I loved that bike , still do . It was however stolen from our garage in August , the one and only time my Father left the door open . A neighbor next to us was going through a bad divorce and had a son the same age as me . To this day I honestly believe he stole my GT Mach One and gave it to his son , but we could never prove it . He moved a year & half later , and I remember his name clear as day Richard Holden...I've actually scoured Facebook , Myspace looking his name up to see if there's any pictures of my bike . Total e-stalker , but that bike meant a lot to me .

I see so many 1985 GT Mach One's here in the Museum and I really would like to have another one . If I ever save enough money I will buy one complete or do a build-up from a f/f . After my bike was stolen I started skating and have been since 1986 . My 7 year-old son's interest in BMX put me back into the world of Old School BMX Bikes , and it totally blows me away . His 1st bike is a 1987 Schwinn Predator Free Form BG w/ Mags . Who knows , maybe I'll find a 1985 GT Mach One for him to ride and enjoy like I did....you better believe it will be within my sight 24/7 . lol . wink

Awesome!  Cycle Cave is still there and so is the original owner your Grandpa would had bought it from.  I bought my first real BMX bike as well around 1979, it was a Mongoose, my parents purchased it from Mr. Z's which was just a little down the road from Cycle Cave.  I sold the mongoose a little later and built up a Race Inc.

Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

I'm ancient enough to have made mine from a used early 70's Sting-Ray, shite canned the bars, guard, tires and seat for cheap aftermarket bmx stuff from the local hardware store which carried a few bikes and parts. Must have been '76 or so.

First "real" BMX bike was a '83 GT pro. Raced it. Got it from Beacon Bikes, Egg harbor Township NJ
It was a real small store, then they expanded big time, to northfield, NJ

Re: Where did you get your first BMX bike?

I started out racing on a Schwinn Scrambler at The Ranch BMX Track in Menomonee Falls in 1980 or 81. Pops realized that the Scrambler wasn't gonna cut it. So in to Classic Bike shop we go and picked out a Thruster Tri Power frame only. Classic didn't have Thruster forks in stock Rollie the owner said we can order some but I have these chrome Cooks Bros forks that will match the chrome frame with blue decals. Rims some blue stamped patent pending Z's laced to some blue Sunshine sealed hubs. Black square Tuff Neck with some Redline V bars. Blue Maxi Cross cranks with some blue ano Surefoot II's which he filed down to razor sharp shin rippers. Blue MX brake, blue Comp II's and blue Oakley 3 batman grips with Perry Kramer California Lite pads, and a Haro Type 2 plate. Cost I have know idea but it wasn't cheap. Recently sold on Craigslist Milwaukee to a guy named Tony who was also a member of the museum I was hoping he would post it up but not yet. I regret selling it everyday but it did fund me buying two used 24's so I can't complain, who would listen anyway.
