1998 Mongoose DMC

Dennis McCoy's signature bike from his final year with Mongoose.  Mix of NOS stock parts and upgrades.

I only realised this bike existed from looking through bikes in the BMX Museum - there was only one listed (still is apart from mine!).  I decided to set up a mid school bike because my first build since getting back into the hobby was a 1985 Aero Reflex; as with all old school rides - they're fine for riding as a teenager but not so much nowadays wink
I managed to get hold of a complete DMC in excellent condition from a classified ad almost straight away.  I then picked up another one the following week on ebay!  That was eighteen months ago and I haven't seen one come up since.  I've taken my time sourcing the parts I wanted, and I've tried to keep it roughly era correct.
I'm really happy with how it's turned out - it's practically bomb proof... not light though!
A few personal touches:
The Fishbone seat is original, but because it was scuffed I managed to find a NOS Littlebone seat and removed the fabric to re-cover it.  It wasn't straight forward though - the seats are completely different shapes, so I had to re-sculpt the foam before stretching and stapling the fabric.  I thought it would never work - but amazingly it turned out perfectly without hitting any problems atall!
The rims are Alex Supra E 48h triple walls laced 4X to GSport Homer hubs - got to be the strongest wheels around?  Anyway I asked for some advice on shiny side wheels on the Catchall forum and got plenty of advice (thanks guys?).  I was told it took maybe a couple of hours per wheel to sand them - well I reckon I've spent 20 hours per wheel and only done one side on each!  I guess it makes it more distinctive having one side black and one side shiny!  I may sand the other sides one day - but I doubt it.
The frame is perfect - I stripped the original paint off and had it powdered along with the crank arms and seat post.  It was supposed to be brilliant white but it's actually more of a creamy white - great job though and I really like how it's turned out!
The pegs are Fishbone Turnpegs - really beefy looking things!  They only made them in 3/8" but I thought no problem - I'll just get the holes drilled out to 9/16".  That was fine but then when I came to fit the wheels I realised the socket to tighten the bolts wouldn't fit inside the pegs aaargh!  I had to get the bolt heads machined down to make it work - not an easy job.  It wouldn't have been so bad but this all happened the Friday afternoon before MK10 (think Rockford but in the UK).  Luckily my local metal workers came through for me!
I've always preferred zero rake forks since BITD so I put some Odyssey Flatland forks on instead of the stock ones.  Then I thought - why not put the brake on the back?  It makes it more distinctive and I can't see why it would affect the braking?
I managed to get hold of the original DMC decals but really wanted to go with a white/blue colour scheme.  I got my local sign maker to (re)produce some for me and I also changed the DMC and headtube decals as I wasn't keen on the originals.  While I was at it I thought I may as well get a few other decals made up - so I have some awesome GSport, Alex, and Fishbone decals you won't see anywhere else, amazing quality too!
Anyway, I got back in to this hobby to ride with my little boy and now I've finally found the perfect bike for me I (probably) won't build anymore.  I am a total mid-school convert!  I will still enjoy riding, and looking at all the fantastic bikes in the museum.  Chris
