1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
Near Mint Coqpit Project #4
Ok ever since i was a kid i always wanted to build a custom super high end race bike sparing no expense. I have built several very nice bikes in the past but always ended up cutting a corner somewhere or just going with second best rather then holding out for the better 1. This project was a testament to that. Build the best bike i can with all the parts i wanted regardless of cost or rarity. There were other frames i was debating in the beginning. Other frame choices were a Technique the Powerlite Coqpit with the carbon top tube and seat mast. Missed a chance to get 1 off ebay but if i waited for another 1 of those id be old and gray by the time i started this project. And a GT ultra box. and as you can see i went with the Coqpit. The ONLY used parts on this entire build are the bars pedal bodies and pedal spindles tho show few if any signs of wear. And to all the ppl out there that claimed to have built an 18lb XL with parts that couldnt possibly be lighter then 21... shame on you. This 1 however i assure you is 18lbs. And if i went with a lighter frame bottom bracket bars and chain i could have got this down to just under 17lbs. But i like this set up too much to simply save weight.
Parts list:Fork: Saso Carbon/aluminumHeadset: Chris KingCranks: Profile RetrosSprocket: Profile blue ano spline driveChain: chrome KMC 710 SLSpindle: FSA Titanium hollow spindle with Bluesix hollow Ti boltsBottom bracket: NOS Profile EvolutionPedals: Crupi Mini Rounds with Ti Spindles and Blue ano cagesRims: Chrome Alien nation Runaway 36HHubs: Profile Race Mini 36h 9t LHD blue with all ti hardware.spokes: Ti natural finishnipples: blue ano alloyTires: Tioga power block S-specRim Strips: Shadow conspiracybars: Aluminum ELF Blast Barsgrips: Animal Edwin De la Rosa with eastern bar ends and left side grip stop blue Ano and blue Lizard Skins donutsStem: Supercross front load blue ano with Blue6 Ti boltsSeat: Tioga D-Spyder Carbon CompositeSeat post: EPX Carbon Fiber.brakes: TRP donny robinson signature v brakes with carbon lever and Titanium hardware
7-7-10just added the Saso carbon forks and got the retro profiles. wont mount them till i get the wheels.changed the black PL stem i had to this 1 that i polished up myself. it too is a stand in till i get the polished bullseye stem i want. more to come as soon as im not broke.
8-11-10just ordered a blue ano profile spline drive sprocket Ti spindle and spindle bolts. wanted to try something new which was a race bike with a compact drive. also was originally going to use all neutral colors but i decided to go with blue ano. not going all out on the blue like i did on my auburn and fit with all the purple. going to keep it simple. blue ano sprocket hubs nips MAYBE ill go with the blue ano bullseye stem was even pondering something super light like the odyssey elementary v3 everything else will be neutral.
11-26-10i settled with the epx carbon seat post and just installed it. soon as i recieve my new jp cages and get the crupi minis from a friend ill decide which of them ill use on this build. either way its going to be sweet.
12-12-10Just got a set of Crupi mini rounds with Ti spindles. replaced the bearings and soon will get new polished cages.
12-25-10Just got the tires hoops seat grips rim strips bar ends and grip stop. just put everything i have up to now assembled.
1-4-11Just got the brakes today and they are sweet and extremely light! just so i can finally get this frame on the ground i temp mounted a set of primo comet tires to a set of spin rims. nowhere near as light as whats going to be on it later but they will do for now. all thats left is a blue supercross stem chrome KMC 710 SL chain titanium spokes and profile hubs with all ti hardware.
1-17-11ok updated museum pics with current 1s. the wheels and tires are temp just so i can get this thing rolling. and if i go with the carbon stealth bars the powerbends will go as well.
2-16-11Just got the blue ano Supercross stem with Blue6 Ti bolts, silver kmc 710SL chain and the Ti spokes today. the profile hubs are on the way..... hurry up fed ex!!! the anticipation is killer.
2-21-11just got the Profile hubs in the mail today. was scheduled to finish this up today but an unexpected problem with bad quality nipples will push things back a few days. oh well.
2-26-11After 8 months FINALLY finished this 1. the blue cages was the last piece to go on. was slightly disappointed that the shade was a bit off from what i was expecting but looks sweet nevertheless. feel free to tell me what you think
3-31-11last min change. the aluminum blast bars were simply too awesome not to put on this bike. so off came the powerbends and now i do believe thats it for this build....i think....

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
thanks for the compliment this project will be the pride and joy of my collection when i finally finish it. and that wasnt stupid at all in fact you are right. those are the special wrenches required to install the profile evolution BB. by far the smoothest bb i have ever had or seen. super easy to install w/o a hammer and the weight of a feather on the end of the crank arm is enough to turn the crank. and only 4 ouches heavier then a regular profile BB. not an issue with all the super light parts ill be using. stay tuned for parts list updates and project progression. ![]()

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
i been thinking alot about the fork. on 1 hand i like it because its different and not many of them out there. but on the other hand if im building a ultra high end bad a@@ machine i need the lightest and best. which these forks are heavier then both the scythe and dagger. and im pretty sure the answers are more stronger. i dont plan on taking it to a track and race it either..... hmmm i guess if i could find a buyer for this fork it would make my decision easier. any suggestions?

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
I reckon stick with period correct parts man, in 1999 the best fork was probably the answer carbo pro (I don't think the scythe or dagger were out then). The answers would look badass on that frame, the same sort as on my silver haro in the museum.
This ride is gonna be so sweet man!

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
well i already broke the period accurate code on this build. my main goal is ultra light modern mostly. and i did weigh the saso fork and shockingly w/o the compression device its only 690 grams which is lighter then the scythe even with the compression device its only 710 grams. well i have much time to ponder this since this project is slow going due to the cost of these parts lol and thanks again for the comments ![]()

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
man you got an awesome bike there! just not so sure about that small sprocket. im about to start on my speed series and im thinking of updating it as i go just like you did...of course a 15 year old isnt going to have a bike built exactly the way he wants it in a short period (i dont got no money!
) but it will be fun. keep up the awesome work!

Thermal count is rising, In perpetual writhing. The primordial ooze, And the sanity they lose. Awakened in the morning, To more air pollution warnings. Still we sleepwalk off to work, While our nervous systems jerk. Pretending not to notice, How history had forebode us. With the green house in effect, Our environment was wrecked. Now, I can only laugh, As I read our epitaph. We end our lives as moles, In the dark of DAWN PATROL

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
yah with things like a stem its easy to put a temp in till you can get the 1 you really want. but when it comes to brand new shiney rims i dont want to lace them with old hubs and spokes only to take them apart again later. but i think the wait makes it fun. wouldnt be a project if i got it done in a day. and why do ppl hate the 25/9 so much? the ratio is almost identical to a 36/13 or 44/16. just trying something different. watch when its done ppl will say wow bad ass you were right that is sich
![]()
as for you fun palace. just do what you can and have fun with it.
i remember when i was a kid being in that same position. if only i could have had all that shiney chrome from the 80s like i wanted or kept the stuff i did have then id be rich now ![]()

Cause it's more freestyle than race and kinda new school for this build I'd say?
Either way, people should build bikes how they want them, not how I or anyone else wants them!
I remember back in the mid 1990s I was one of very few guys using 39/14 in my local area, I did it cause the smaller sprockets combined with a shorter chain meant a little weight saving, and I was really into light bikes. In reality I should have just taken a dump before every race - woulda been cheaper!

Re: 1999 Powerlite Coqpit XL
3/4 of the parts on this frame are not period accurate so that part dont matter really. besides im going for high tech and modern with a frame i simply wanted to build for a very long time. more ppl need to think more outside the box and not follow the same exact thing everyone else does just because they say so. thats how creativity is lost. as for performance i seen other ppl race a 25/9 setup and kick some serious ass. and remember back in the days ppl swore by front and rear 14mm axles 48h rims and bikes that were massive and heavy for freestyle. now we know better right? dare to be different i think.
