Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

I'm also in your boat, except for the frustrated part. Never had a freestyle bike before I found this hobby at the nice age of 30. My problem is I am too cautious. I have a family to feed so I don't even try anything too dangerous. I am a true 31yr old newb. There is a skatepark not too far away thats calling my name also. Even bought a decent helmet from the goodwill.  cool

I know there is alot of good flatland how to videos on you tube. I have watched a few.  cool

First things first dude.  CALM DOWN.  I just got back into this thing a few months ago and just finished my a week ago.  I am currently healing from a sprained wrist, two road rashed knees, and repairing my bike.  This shit wont happen over night.  The more frustrated you get the harder it will end up being.  Seriously.  I cant give you technique tips because i have forgotten more than I will likely ever learn back, but calm down and dont give up.

Dont wanna hear about that "time and practice crap" huh? You should just stop riding then cause that is the only way to learn anything decent. I'll bet you could learn to beat box quicker go for that instead.

You have to wear a pink tank-top and listen to Wham while you practice or you`ll never progress! lol

Get Matt Wilhelm's How To Video, & sorry to say it but... PRACTICE. No doubt that learning tricks can be hard & at times frustrating, not to mention painful!!! But that's what makes finally pulling off a trick feel so GOOD!

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

Right foot on left pedal . left foot on front left peg . put some weight over the handle bars and push your right foot off your pedal swinging your handle bars 180' , Keep a lil forward lean over the bars and keep your balance with your right leg , Dnt rush you want a nice slow fluid motion , The control of the bike comes through the handle bars , Feel yourself going left correct it by putting weight on the right side of the handle bars keeping your body centered and pull the bike back to level. From there once your rolling you can grab the seat and raise the back of the bike from the ground {Always keep a finger or two on the front brake to aid with balance and keep your body centered over the handle bars} . Simple move to learn and you wont get hurt if you come of your bike . cool Trick is , dont rush . If you start getting frustrated take 5 out and try again . Weight over the handle bars is the key

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

The way i first learnt was just throwing one leg over the handle bars and kicking my front wheel forward . Once i had momentum id put my foot on the peg and throw my other leg over the bars {Same thing but without the glide} . Once i had this down i progressed to doing glides . i cant do much else tho . Endo's . Wheelies , Been practicing my manuals with Oeli's help , 180's to 180 out n some moves that i dnt know the names of cause im slack like that lol like the one from rad where he lays his bike down , stand on the peg and swings his leg , then swings the bike 360 n rides out

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

I am 37 years old and got back into it myself. i used to ride back in my teens and I was surprised that I still have SOME of it..lol Tho.. I know my limits these days because I am an auto mechanic and I cant afford for get seriously injured.Just take your time. One thing I did was buy "Ground Rules" Volume 1 It shows/teaches you the basics as well as some advanced stuff. It took me 2 weeks to learn rock walks w/ no brakes. The hardest part of it was getting the nerve to whip the 1st 180 of the trick. It took commitment. Overall... work on finding your balance and in no time fork glides will be second nature...But like everyone said ... it`s all about practice and dont let people discourage you from having fun. I get comments that I am too old to do this .. but I am just having fun.

Gotta go .. Working on scuff tricks and whiplashes now ...lol

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

Hey Bro, I hope your riding is progressing well. Just saw this thread.
If you are still having balance problems, I always found a combination of overall body strength and staying relaxed, to be most helpful.
I remember hearing a story about Brian Blyther back in the 1980's being so relaxed on a half pipe that he forgot to hold on to the grips coming back down and slammed. A little too relaxed on that one, but it is why he is one of the all time greats. Try to relax and not tense up. I have taught a dozen or so people to ride a unicycle and found this to be key for that also.
For strengthening ride up hills, and work on bunny-hops, wheelies and endos a lot.
Also, visualize what you want to do, clearly, before you try it. This will work more than you will believe. See it, then do it. This is a pro level athletic technique that is well studied and documented in basketball, Olympic training, martial arts etc...
There is more to practice than trying and failing at one thing over and over. Ride and have fun!
Good luck!

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

I hear ya too,i got back into bikes a year ago right after i broke my foot and was in a cast. I used to freestyle a bit back in the day,im 34. I know how frustrating it is,i sued to ride backwards so easliy back in the day im slowly getting my balance back now. U should check out The GRound rules dvd,it is just one long 2 hour tutorial,im only halfway on it and soon im gonna use it as a guide, ive been too busy riding so i havent realy tried tricks for a while cause im too tired aftwerwards,i not that young anymore so i lose my breath and stamina.Im out of shape too so im slowly getting back in shape thats to bikes.Hang in there time patience and devotion.

Re: need help! easy freestyle tricks are pissing me off!

hey Mongooseman11

My Peregrine Brother

I been there my self go to Global flatland bmx.com

And go to the tricks tab

It shows you hot to do the trick and then it shows you the trick in slow-motion so that you grasp the concept.

Also the other members are right once you get grasp the concept it takes lots of practice , don't get frustrated that takes up your energy & time.

Spend that time and energy into practicing review the videos go step by step.

1. Be confident even if you keep messing up.
2. Stay balanced or I should say try and keep your balance ( This is Key )
3. And Practice Practice, Practice
3.

Yea, it took me like a month or two to learn roll backs. just keep practicing and concentrating, because i've been riding for a year now and its a blast because i controlled what tricks to practice at what time.cool
