Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

I like to buy s&m standard profile and USA products because people here need jobs bad, and USA products arent any more expensive than foreign products anymore. One sunday wtp and all those companies got their names out and people found of they made nice things their prices went right up to the height of USA products.

Like apocolypse said ( i think i spelled that wrong) people are buying what they wanted years ago

when i was a kid i rode a pile of sh*t 35 pound bike and all the kids around me had standard and s&ms and raved about how nice they were and when I finally turned 16 I got a job and bought a bike with profiles and s&m parts and love the parts like I thought I would. so now its what i stick to! :-)

the warranty departments do rock for some of the over seas companies, no receipt deal is great, but s&m and profile and standard have a lifetime warranty with proof of purchase which is kinda a set back but it makes sense to have the receipt policy. FBM has a crap policy though thats for sure haha!

damn you dont get it?

what? i liek this frm Macneil.
"We proved everyone wrong. We made them better. It was pretty funny seeing the expression on the face of the engineer every time we suggested doing something differently. He kept saying, “You don’t want to do that, it’ll cost more.† We kept saying, “That’s fine, we’ll pay as much as it takes to make it perfect.† He’d never heard that before. All anyone ever asked him to do was make it cheaper. We changed the way a lot of companies made their frames and that pretty much lead to the acceptance of Taiwan frames. If you think about it, the computer you’re working on right not was probably made in Taiwan, and it’s a lot harder making a computer than welding a frame together. To say that a Taiwanese welder can’t weld as good as a Canadian or American to me is straight up racist. Now that we’ve been doing business in Taiwan for several years and have established good relationships over there we’ve now begun doing all of our machining over there too."

this is from wiki.
The Taiwanese government does not have a set minimum wage, but a basic wage in its Labor Standards Law serves the minimum wage function. The basic wage set per month is NT$17,280, effective July 1, 2007.[29]

like i said, i dont know if thats a competitive wage or their cost of living. thats would be the minimum wage which is like 600 US per month,id imagine skilled worker get paid more.

Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

alot of stuff made overseas is awesome quality! i just like to keep my money in america, when i can. dont get me wrong, i own plenty of stuff, not even bmx related, thats imported. i think we all do.  when it comes down to $400 for a bmx frame, i'll take the american made frame everytime over the taiwan made frame.

It's not that I don't think the oversees parts aren't any good. But if I can get a US made at least equal quality part, I'm willing to pay 10% more for the US jobs.

Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

im willing to do that as well. if i bought a brand new frame from dans it would probably be an s&m if im honest with myself. im just not wanting to spend 400 on a frame right now, or even close to it. im not into buying the newset frames right when they come out.....

ill ride USA dont get me wrong, i love USA brands and have USA parts on my bikes. .. but im also willing to get an awesoem overseas frame on closeout for 150 bucks new in the box and then ride the hell out of it. im willing to ride odyssey parts on my bikes and fly parts etc.

Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

If I ever have to replace my Sunday and I don't like anything Sunday is making at the moment (or they changed the way they are doing stuff, then I'm going with a combo FBM and S&M. I know what you mean about prices, but I think that it's worth the money to buy American. That and I would love to build a custom FBM frame, how cool would it be to have a 22" tt on a 20" BMX?

I saw that back when you first started to sell it and I really wanted it except for the fact that the 990's were on the chainstays.

Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

I remember some of the older guys I rode with had some S&M stuff, and those frames looked pretty nice. I got a Supercross as my first aftermarket frame and beat the crap out of it for a few years until I cracked it. Fizz'z bike shop had one Next Generation Holmes on closeout for $150, so my parents bought it for me for my birthday. Ever since then, I've had a thing for S&M stuff. I'm leaning towards getting a new Dirt Bike or Stricker in a year or two when I retire my Grim Reaper.

Re: Is S&M becoming the new "Hutch"?

Awesome thread, Faust. big_smile Maybe the reason the S&M brand is so successful is the visionary nature of Moeller himself.  This "Dog Bites" column he wrote in 1990 shows the the mindset of a guy who wouldn't let those he most respected stop realization of his vision http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_pggDuIKMRJQ/R … sAug90.jpg , and I doubt his mindset has changed at all since then.  Thanks Ryan for the brilliant S&M blog!

S&M stuff is great.
I will only buy quality American made frames (I.E.- S&M, Standard, FBM). Hell, check out my bikes for proof.
The prices that some people are charging for S&M stuff is rediculous though.

Is it what people are charging or what people are paying that is ridiculous?

Both. Although I will agree that some items are semi-rare and hard to find. Some of the items that go for a lot of money deserve to sell for a lot. Then there are some items that are still in production, yet the sellers are trying to charge an arm and a leg for them (I.E.- see what some people are charging for S&M stickers..........). Of course with the popularity of S&M stuff, it really makes some of the Ebay auctions go for crazy amounts of money!!!
