1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

This is my Moose, I got it when I was nine years old for christmas in 1980. My whole life then revolved around bike riding, I was always taller than the other kids and I think I had already gone through 3 bikes before this one. I remember my old man saying lets see if he can break this one, well he was right, I couldn't break it. I rode the hell out of this thing until I was 17 and got my first car. I could never part with it, so I have dragged it around for the last 20 years, it ended up being stored at my factory for the last 15 years or so where it gathered dust and quietly deteriorated.
Every kid I ever came across wanted to know what sort of bike it was, I would tell them it was a Moosegoose and they would always say "don't ya mean a Mongoose", they would then tell me that there was no such thing, even though I was sitting on it right in front of them. I never saw another moose anywhere, closest thing I ever saw was an older kid turned up at the local track with a Kos Kruiser.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

Thanks for your comments guys, I've already started pulling it apart. I'm not looking forward to the quote from the chrome platers though. I can't remember if these are the original pedals or not, are they available anywhere? Also can't remember if it originally had a pad on the frame, it's still got the original mongoose pad on the handle bars but it's totally shagged.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

Ben,
you may want to try an OXALIC ACID Bath on it. If the chrome isn't pitted, it just may need to be bathed in OA and then some good ol elbow grease with some Mothers Chrome Polish. There are threads on the use of Oxalic on this site as well as the other BMX sites. Good luck and keep us posted.

Pedals look like either KKT or MKS Rat Traps. Might be kinda pricey at times. You can always get a set of the painted/anodized looking ones and strip them and then either POWDER or paint them in black. Heck you might want a used set if you plan making it a rider.Post it in the WANTED items page, someone may have a set for you.

Also you mention pads. A set of VINYL Mongoose pads in NOS condition should run anywhere between $100 to maybe the low $200's on ebay.Depending on color. Once again, you may want to post it in the wanted section of the site.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

Thanks Nick. I've already checked up on the OA but the frame is to pitted, I'm afraid it's a full rechrome job. As for the pads a set sold on ebay here in Aus for $128 last week, guess I shouldv'e grabbed them, it seems to be the going rate.

It's an OVERSIZED 20" bike. Kinda like a cruiser with 20" wheels.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

I used to have one too!  My parents got me one because I was tall.  It was ugly to me then, but I wish I still had it.  Mine was candy apple red.  Have fun restoring it to it's former glory.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

Well the resto is finally underway. I have decided to do a quick job on the bike as I am going to give it to my 11 year old son to ride. So instead of spending $500 on a re-chrome I got the frame powder coated in a metallic blue. After all I can always re-chrome it later. This has however created a new problem in that the powder coating came out a little darker than I was hoping for and I think the original blue skyway tuffs will look out of place. So what are your thoughts? I was thinking of going with black tuffs with black gumwalls, black grips and pads. Any other suggestions.

PS the original tuffs are shagged, I was going to put in the hard yards and clean them up till I discovered the front wheel is cracked half way through one of the spokes. So new ones are now a must. It's just a matter of which color....

The more I thimk about it, I think the black wouldn't look right. I might stick with blue wheels and tires.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

Your moosegoose's history sounds a lot like my mongoose's history.  It's an extra plus when it's the same bike you had when you were a kid.  cool

In case you haven't stumbled across this - skyway is reissuing mag wheels in these colors: Blue, Red, Green, Light Blue, Gray, Orange, Pink & Yellow
http://www.skywaywheels.com/news.htm#004

WANT TO BUY:
A'ME goggles (black) with the black strap and white font on it that says A'ME from the 1980s
"GEAR" RACING PANTS from 80s - size 32"-34"
zeronine gloves "Wrist-Wrap" (black and white)
1982-83 Mongoose helmet wrap-around decal
pm or email cool

Totally missing the point since 1971.

Re: 1980 Mongoose Moosegoose

i'd go blue all the way with it.
the blue paint won't look so dark to you once you put new blue mags on it.
your old ones are faded bad.
that's my two bits anyway.
