1982 Kuwahara E.T.

1982 Kuwahara E.T.

All three versions of the Kuwahara ET's released in 1982

Almost all original except for a few parts that are coming with the total restorations of these bikes. From left to right: 1982 Kuwahara ET Original, model 3003, the highest spec one available. 1982 Kuwahara ET Replica, Model 3009, the middle of the road. 1982 Kuwahara ET Apollo, Coaster Brake model, the department store bike. The Apollo is factory correct except for the grips and silver KKT pedals (should be black), even has the ugly NOS IRC tractor tyres. The Replica is... all original and correct. The Original has the wrong grips and tyres but everything else is correct. The rest of the goodies shown are a mixture of production and prototype items that were rejected by Universal Studios. The baskets and some of the plates never made it into production. The Original currently has the one and only Elina ET seat with a picture of ET on it. This seat was canned at the prototype stage. More ET bikes and prototype items to come...

WOW; you aren't BS'n "Elliott", that is some serious bidness right there. Kuwahara never put out one that had 3 piece cranks?

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

Kuwahara only ever released three versions of the ET, all with one piece cranks.
The looptail high tensile steel frame was produced just to keep the costs down so kids could afford them.
That's why they didn't use the KZ-1 cromo frame for ET's, most kids couldn't have bought them due to the high price.
That's also why ET's came standard with lower spec parts and the KZ-1 came with top end Suntour parts including 3 piece cranks.
ET's also had short top tubes to apeal to younger kids.
There are ET's about with 3 piece cranks, usually in gold with gold parts.
They look fantastic in my opinion but they aren't standard.

A looptail ET with gold components is on the drawing board.
Also coming is a replica of Elliott's bike from the movie with the correct milk crate.

Ahh time and money...

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

Well there will be a latex rubber ET in the basket on the movie replica that talks to you (triggered by a motion detector) if you approach the bike. It's all about 70% ready to go.

Time and money...

There you go, I put the pic of ET in the basket up.
The basket is identical to the one used in the movie, except I have to paint it.

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

Elliot - The ET on the left(Original) is Chromoly and the middle(Replica) is high tensile steel?!

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

crowe-t, ref the above...

ALL looptail ET frames were High Tensile steel with Cromoly forks. So the Original 3003 and Replica 3009 were the same frame and fork. It's well documented from magazine tests at the time. I also have the original Factory build spec sheets with photo's of the complete 1982 Kuwahara Range, it details every component on every model as well as frame material and color range etc.

The Apollo ET was only mild Steel.

The KYZ looptail frames although they look the same as an ET were Cromo main tube frame as in 1/2 Cromo. You can pic them though as they have the little hole in the gusset behind the big hole just like a KZ-1 or KZ-2 frame. ET frames don't have the little hole in the gusset, if they do then someone has faked an ET using a KYZ.

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

Probably the most expensive to buy now, of the lower quality bikes from back in the day.

Even the highest end ET is still a cheap Hightensile steel frame, so it's value is in the ET novelty not the quality of the product.

This is the definition of a bmx collection. These need to be looked after (I'm sure they are)

I am sure 100 years from now, they will blow peoples minds.

Way cool seat, but basically E.T. would have his nose in your butt anytime you rode. wink

These bikes are stunning, along with the other E.T. paraphenalia.

Re: 1982 Kuwahara E.T.

Wow, that is awesome!  Believe it or not, I never saw the movie until just last week, when my wife put it on for my daughters.  I got drawn in watching the bike chase scene, and my wife just looked at me like I was nuts when I was all excited:  "Honey, those are Kuwaharas!"  She couldn't care less, but I thought it was way cool.

Excellent collection, what an amazing project!  Must have taken you FOREVER to get all those parts together...
