1983 Redline 600a

1983 Redline 600a

600a race machine

I bought my 600a series three serial # RH 07118 after my other bike got stolen in 1983. I saved up all my paper route money. Then I started scouring the papers for a used redline. I wanted a Redline because I heard they were the best and only one guy in my town had one. They looked so cool at the bike store and in the magazines. My town did not have a bike store so when ever my mother made the 45 minute trip to Cedar Rapids Iowa I would go along with her. I would have her drop me off at Car City Big Wheels (the coolest bike and skate board shop in CR). When I found a used 600a in the paper I begged my mother to go and take a look at it. So, after a ton of pleading she gave in. When I saw it I knew I had to have it. I think I may have paid $125-$175 I can not remember. I then used it to do my paper route and to race. I quit racing after about 3 years because it we had to travel to Cedar Rapids to do it and my mother was getting a little tired of it. In those 3 years I only remember getting less than first overall once when I took secound my first race as a novice. The bike has had several sticker changes. I would get a new set of stickers each year to keep it looking new. I now wish I would not have done this because I am finding it impossible to get 600a series three stickers.  I used this bike in high school until I saved enough money for a car. It has been in my parent’s garage since. I finally retrieved it and it is still fast smooth and quiet. I will probably tune it up and ride it with my kids. If you have not ridden a 600a, they are fast smooth and responsive.

I just got done installing the original stickers on my 600a and I think it looks sweet.  So I thought I should put some updated pics.

It came with the Dia-compe 890 brake set. You can get the decal set on eBay.

I am not quite sure where you are refering to.  The only hole in the rear of the bike is hte hole above the wheel for the break.  Above that is a flat peice of metal conecting the two bars that lead down to the rear wheel.  I could e-mail you some pics.  I coul not attach them to this

Re: 1983 Redline 600a

I'm in the process of restoing a 600a.  I bought the sticker set off ebay.  Only thing is the words  SERIES THREE and the small rear stickers that say REDLINE ALL CHROMO are white.  All other stickers in set are exact.  I plan on getting a sign shop to scan them in and change the white to black.  If you are sill looking for the sticker set, let me know.  My e-mail address is stevepen@comcast.net
Thanks,
Steve

Re: 1983 Redline 600a

I have the scan of the 500a's. Im pretty sure theyre the same. Most of the ones on the bay dont even have the "Series Three" on them. I was going to get them made, but I got quoted a couple hundred bucks to get it done. I cant afford that for a set of stickers. lol

Re: 1983 Redline 600a

Thanks to a person who sent me some cool series 3 stickers my bike is now back to the way it originally was.  I don't know their museum name or I would type it in.  Now my next mission will be to look for the black and grey pads that my mom threw away.

Re: 1983 Redline 600a

I had a 600a too. Great story on your bike Wes. Will have to make some memory and post up some stuff about it. Ran into some pictures jumping on a bowl with it around 1990.

Very neat 600a, and the history behind the bike makes it even better then a new build.

Re: 1983 Redline 600a

Thanks this is my favorite bike of all time.  Not for the value but because of the memories.  Thanks for the kind words.  Just got some pads for it.  I will update pictures soon.
