LOL  lol  No chance man.  I used to build them out of steel back in the day before I started welding ornamental and you can't even get a launch ramp for $500 fully welded with Skatelite sheeting.

You can make a small quarter pipe for $100 my friends an I have done it before. Granted it was only wood, no welding.

Yeah, I know.  We used to do it when were kids too.  Or collect sraps from the home developers in the neighbourhood.  wink

LOL! That's how we built a quarter pipe or half pipe every few years in NYC! Lots of construction sites here!!!

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

haha my friends and i collected a little more that scraps.. lol

we damn near built a whole skatepark one summer off of site wood.

i think you can pull off a decent mini with like $600-800 (if you build it yourself)

and you forsure have to get a pipe and chains for it ramps attract kids like flys on $hit.

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

An $800 halfpipe will be alot of fun for about 9 months, then the maintenence issues kick in. Dont waste your time building one if you are going to build it out of standard 2X4's and sit it on your lawn. Use as much pressure treated wood as your wallet can handle. The biggest issue is dont build it on the groung. Get it up in the air atleast 6"  (like a deck) and buy a qualtiy tarp and locking set up for it.

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

I had multiple quarterpipes when I was younger. It started when BMX Action had plans for a 6 footer sometime in 84 or 85. People were bugging out all over the place because something like that was absolutely outrageous for the time. I have tons of stories. People showing up unannounced to session it. Going out for a few hours and returning to see neighborhood kids on it. Putting chains and stuff on it before going on vacation, and finding out people cut them off to ride it while I was gone. And, some jackass insurance guy showing up to make us take it down since it was an insurance risk. But, alot of people loved it. Even the cops who would stop and encourage us to go higher. We had lights on it and rode it well into the night. We started construction on a halfpipe, but never finished it due to money and the group of friends involved split up.

My advice is to use good plans and good materials. It will definitely pay off in the end. Keep it on the DL if you can, and find some way to block people from using it when you are gone. Lots of work but damn was it fun.

2-3 grand easy if you want it to be worth a damn. sure you can build a rickety ass mini ramp out of scrap wood, but you are gonna one time like come down hard or bail and bust a hole right through it.

THIS IS A 90'S RARE GEM - MR. HOFFMAN, MR. HAWK AND MANY OTHER CELLEBRITIES WOULD BE PROUD TO HAVE THIS BIKE AMONG THEIR COLLECTION.

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

That's true. There were a few local people that tried to copy me by building a ramp. Not only did they screw up the curve/transition of the ramp, they used cheap wood and not enough 2x4s. This stuff is dangerous enough without having to worry about going right through the ramp.

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

Me and a friend built a small quarter pipe for my son.  Got the plans from this site its great, its free and has videos.  even has cost estimates.  Super strong.  It worked great.  we messed a little with the transition so it didn't go steep to fast.  Still great but would stick more to the plans next time.

Nice thing to build for your son. If that ramp doesn't go all the way to vert, he might wind up hanging up once he goes over the coping. How old is he? If he's really young and just learning the ropes, that gentle transition was probably the right thing to do.

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

Check out http://rampplans.org/ .  Lots of pics/plans/tips on ramp building.  There's also a forum on there and some of the members have built some really crazy ramps.

A few years ago I built a 4' tall 8' wide 1/4 pipe in my garage (pole barn).  I was able to build it out of OSB since it was inside.  I think I spent about $100 on it.

I wish I lived near that $300 halfpipe. I would buy that thing and connect it to my second floor deck.

thanks.  he is only 8.  he was 7 when we built it.  It does go up to vert though, its just a funky transition.

Cool. It was probably just the way my laptop was angled giving me a bad perspective. Can he do an aerial or does he carve it up? I have no children so I've got no perspective on what an 8 year old can do. smile

Re: how much would it cost to build a half pipe ???????????????

Here are some pictures of some nice ramps here in Germany I rode yesterday.  The Halfpipe is solid wood and the nicest I have seen out of wood.

Minimum of $800 will be the cost of building a half pipe.
