Re: Handlebars - Hutch

This is from the '85 catalog:
http://i176.photobucket.com/albums/w194/ChevyMuscle454ss/Hutch1985catalog.jpg

Side Note:

I've read that some people think Hutch used thinner tubing on their bars to make them lighter... and this sometimes resulted in the bars getting pinched in stems... I've measured one of my two pairs of Hutch bars with some calipers and found the thickness to be 0.050" ... I measured several of my other brand bars and found the thickness to be 0.055 to 0.060 or more.

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

These are a pair of Mike Dominguez Signature Series freestyle bars (The paint has seen better days)... these came off one of my early 86 Trick Stars ...... I'm not familiar with the "1st Class BMX" decal.... may not belong

The measurements are:
28" wide
Main Tubing -       OD = 7/8" and .050" thick
Top Cross bar -    OD = 3/4" x 10 3/4" wide (measured across the top side) .... 6 1/8" (measured center-to-center) up from stem mount
Lower Cross bar -  OD = 1/2" x 8 3/8" wide (measured across the top side) .... 3 1/4" (measured center-to-center) up from stem mount

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

Here's a pair of Buff Bars... (Mike Buff)... I think these are similar, if not the same as the freestyle bars that mobass posted above... just these were a signature series for Mike Buff. The decal that says "Buff Bars" is smudged on this pair.

The measurements are:
27 1/2" wide
Main Tubing -       OD = 7/8" and .050" thick
Top Cross bar -    OD = 1/2" x 11 3/8" wide (measured across the top side weld-to-weld) .... 7" (measured center-to-center) up from stem mount
Lower Cross bar -  OD = 1/2" x 9 1/2" wide (measured across the top side weld-to-we) .... 4 1/2" (measured center-to-center) up from stem mount

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

These are Hutch "Dually Bars" as shown in the 1988 Hutch Catalog...

Notice how the crossbars are flattened out as opposed to the earlier freestyle bar styles shown above.... also knurling at the stem mount

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

The difference between Buff and Dominguez ladder bars is that the top bar is a bigger diameter on Dominguez bars.  Both crossbars are the same diameter on Buff bars.

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

There is some debate around when Futuristic black first appeared. I've heard stories that they were built as early as late-'84

"Bad Bars" were branded later when production was going on in Taiwan. Also note the knurling on bad bars.

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

Rumor has it that Bad bars are Woody bars, but the name was changed to 'bad bars' when Woody defected to Diamondback.

NOS Hutch Badd Bars - in the bag! smile

(and to answer questions above - they're pretty much exactly Woody Bars - same shape and dimensions / geometry, but they added the "HUTCH" stamp, and a cross hatched knurling.. circa 1987 )

Re: Handlebars - Hutch

freestyl wrote:

Hey guys all my bars made by VDC (first), then Hutch are .065 wall thickness.  DB dropped the ball on that and made them .049. Regular handlebars were .049 and I use to bend them like crazy.  My bars basically evolved from Star bars.  Greg Hill use to give me bars and I really liked them, except I kept bending then and ocassionally would hit my face on the cross bar when I would land hard.  I felt bad asking him for bars all the time and one day I was telling Voris about my problem.  So we took the basic star bar design, flattened the sweep a bit, incrased the tubing thickness to .065 and made the cross bar larger for added strength and to look better.  That was the gen 1 VDC made Woody bar.  The only difference between the Gen 1 VDC woody bar and the Gen 2 VDC Woody bar was I lowered the cross bar by an inch to help spare my face a bit on the hard landings.

When I went to ride for Hutch, their design was suppose to be a copy of my VDC Gen 2 bar.  But tubing machines would differ ever so slightly BITD and they were pretty close, but the Hutch made bars are a little narrower on the bottom to give your knees more room.  There is only so much you can do to a handlebar to differentiate it, but mine were the first of their kind with those types of features.  Also, the Hutch made bars had holes drilled in the bottom of the ends to hang them for paint.

The DB bars were suppose to be exact copies of my Hutch made bars, but I'm not sure what happened there.  DB used them on a lot of their bikes, but didn't put my name on them so they would have to pay me a royalty.  I think since then they have probably been the most copied bar on the market.  More than a few of todays best selling bars almost match up identical to my old bars, except for a flatter bend and the knurling.  The knurling really does help, I wish I had done that myself.

Anyhow, I hope this helps.  Also as to different cross bar heights, etc, those were just production errors.  BITD almost all bars were made here in the US by people, not machines.  If you cut a cross bar the wrong length, even an 1/8 of an inch off, it would lower it down on the handlebars.  I have people ask me time and time again, do you think these were proto's or something?  I just smile and tell them no, somebody was probably a little hung over on monday cutting cross bars.....

FYI, if I ever get confused myself, I will defer to the two Matts, they have it pretty dialed.
