1977 Race Inc. / Cycle Pro Foiler / FMF
1977 Race Inc. / Cycle Pro Foiler / FMF
This is one that many will debate, so I will just give my opinion. You know what they say about opinions.
This is one frame that many will question and debate, so I will only give my opinion. This rare year with the oval / teardrop top tube could be either a RACE INC., Cycle Pro Foiler, or a FMF (all frames of which I own). They were all made at the same place anyway, welded by Bill Bastain right? Anyway the only difference between the frames are serial numbers (Which the FMF and Foilers do not have) and the triangle above the brake bridge is longer. The RACE INC. also would have diamond dropouts, which as you notice mine does NOT have. However this frame has a RACE INC. serial number, and the stickers that some idiot peeled off (that would be me) were the original stickers. There was fading around them so bad it is clear as day. So in my opinion it is a RACE INC, that is why I put the RACE INC. stickers back on her, just like she had when I got her. The forks are TANGE.

I've got one of those too in gold and mine has just the head tube sticker on it. The sticker's one of the older Race Inc oval shaped stickers with the word RACE going down and the INC under it. I'm never sure about it either, but when I got it that was the only sticker on it so I left it. It seems to be original to it, but who knows. I really like the bike but I never posted it here because I'm just not sure exactly of the model and year. I can get a pic of mine up later, if just to show that someone else treated it as a Race Inc BITD.
Great bike, by the way.
edit for pix: I named mine Mayor Goldie Wilson.

I had one of these around 1980, and until now I had never seen another! I do not recall any identifying marks. I was told it was an FMF when I bought it (used). Mine was also gold, and had that very distinctive teardrop top tube and fat, bent bottom tube. Mine also had the same dropouts as the one pictured. When I got it, the dropouts were "smeared" (for lack of a better term) by the rear wheel bolts, which dug into the dropout metal. I had to locate some weird, wide aluminum washers to help the problem. Later, I got hit by a car, and the frame cracked just behind the cranks, and I had it welded. The weld job looked awful to me (it was really nothing much, but the gold frame looked so cool), but it held fine. My parents gave it away some time in the 90's, after they cleaned out their garage. Sigh.

SWEEET RIDE! I still have mine...bought it from Hank and Frank in Oakland, CA. the end of 1977. Still has the original Race Inc. stickers on it (the guy that sold it claimed "It's basiclly an FMF"), as well as all the identifying marks I've heard of that prove that mine is a Race Inc. Interestingly, the serial #'s on both the frame and the ashtabula cranks that came with it would suggest that they were from 1978. Can't remember if the mongoose double clamp stem has any #'s to suggest a year, but I may break it down and find out before I post her here. I would like to be as accurate as possible when I post her...after all, she's been my best friend my whole life!

I remember when these came out I had to have one. I could not get the whole bike at once so I built it as I got the cash. Mine was gold also with chrome Cycle Pro forks,Gold tuffneck blue fluted handlebars and seat post and blue tuffwheels. That is when the colored tuffwheels just came out.
