Re: 2004 Ares AYex
yeah, those floating euro bbs look super nice to install, better than profiles with american bbs, my first pair took me an hour to get on and when i was done i realized i didnt have enough spacers in lol.

Re: 2004 Ares AYex
Can someone explain to this dummy (me) why all the newer trick bikes have really small chainwheels? Is it because you don't need to go as fast .... makes for a lot of pedaling though.

Re: 2004 Ares AYex
Many riders stick to a gear ratio comparable to the standard (44-16), so altered performance is rarely the reasoning behind the smaller sprocket/rear cog combo.
Smaller gear ratios=less chain and sprocket=less weight
Flatlanders may run different ratios to suit their needs (i.e. less effort to get up to speed)

Re: 2004 Ares AYex
Even more so, the smaller sprocket allows more room when dealing with upside down tricks. Some flatlanders actually ride with no cranks or sprockets at all. I dont think I could ever part with them. Same goes for my breaks ![]()
Heres a great example of riding "without breaks or cranks".

Re: 2004 Ares AYex
As for street riding, without its cranks, the bike is useless....lol
Also should be noticed that 44/16 gearing has exactly the same pedaling as the 25/9 gearing ![]()

Re: 2004 Ares AYex
Keep in mind the rear triangle of a flatland bike is very short. 13" or so. For this reason you cannot run a sprocket larger that 28t because it will rub the chainstay if it overlaps with the back wheel e.g. the chainstay mus flair out to make room for the tire right after the bottom bracket leaving no room to run anything larger.

Great thread, lots of good info...
Good looking bike too!
Ive always wondered how one of those bar/stem combos feel when ridding? Its gotta save a ton of weight!
Although I am amazed at how innovative the flatland specific stems are!!!
It seems to be the one area of BMX that is really pushing the technological boundaries!
