1985 redline RL20II
All......
i just icked up my 1985 redline rl20II....I had one when I was a kid but as you all know it gets stored in the garage ....15 years go by......then gets thrown out by mom and dad.
So I am going to bring one back to life.....but need some opinions. Is there anywhere that I can find docs or specs or photos of how the 85's were being sold back in those days. Any info is greatly apreciated. thanks

this should get you started, the first two pages from 1985, next two 1986.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
What color are you planning on doing it?
Here is a page with the Specs on the 85 RL20II.
This is an NOS frame(it was built by the previous owner & I now have a set of NOS forks that weren't on it when I took this picture):
Here is a before and after picture of one I sent to Chip at C4 Labs for a re-chrome and Hazard Yellow powder.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
Thanks guys....this is great. The one I have is all white even forks and back end. Previous owner had stated that he found it with no chrome. I saw the before pictures and it looked like he was correct. So I tyhink its one of those rare ones.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
Great images swami - I always loved that inverted air photo of R.L., and always marveled at his knee position (practically over the headtue?!).
Mike - oh you and your gorgeous japanese-made '85s...I'd never leave the house.
Glenn - your '20II looks fantastic! Can't wait to see it finished...
And micc0246 - we need some pics!

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
Go to Photobucket.com and create an acct.
Upload photos from your desktop - then, in the little fields below each individual photo, go to the last field (bottom) and copy the gibberish in that field.
Then, come back here and paste that. Boom - photo.
This is clearly layman's parlance, but should do the trick.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
Here's another page of specs from the Freestylin' March '86 review...doesn't appear that the specs changed when they started selling as a complete bike.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
The specs didn't change much from 85 to 86. The 86 had Dia Compe Nippon brakes instead of the 880's that were on the 85's and the head set changed form the Hatta MX-II to the Hatta MX-10 but otherwise all the rest of the parts are the same. Also the pedals on the 86 were MKS Grafight 2000's.
Here's a close up of the 85 RL20II frames from the RL20II Combo ad posted above.

Re: 1985 redline RL20II
Curious, did anyone's original 85 RL-20II come with the pinstrip decals where the paint ends and the chrome begins? I have seen them on restorations and in magazine ads, but all the RL-20II's that I have seen in person, that were original 85 models never had them.

I know my comment is years too late, but this info is incorrect.
The RL-20II was not available as a complete bike in 1985, only as a combo (FF, stem, bars, brakes with pads, levers, cables) so there was no headset, and no pedals.

I bought mine second hand but when I purchased it during the mid-80s the frame did not have any of the pinstripes you reference.

As an additional note, from what I understand, the first 250 RL 20-IIs, which were generally all white with no chrome, only came as a frame and fork option.
Then the 85 models, as noted above, were offered as the combo package.
