1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

Fresh out of the grandparents attic

I just dug my old JMC out of it's 20+ year hibernation from my grandparents attic this week and thought I'd share. It's an 84 JMC Darrell Young and was the last bike I raced. I bought the frame, fork and 20 X 1 3/8 Ukai rims in 1984 at Action Wheels in NJ. The handlebars and stem are MCS. It also has Red Line flight cranks, Pete's Precision sprocket, Shimano DX's, Grab-On's and a Uni seat. Right now it sits just as I last rode it (around 1986). I plan on disassembling it this winter, polishing and reassembling as is. Thanks for the great site! Chris

The JMC DY is considered by a lot of people to be the first step or one of the first stpes toward modern geometry big_smile

I recently talked to the shop where I got the bike (Action Wheels in NJ) it's still run my the same family who at the time, played a major part of BMX racing in South Jersey. I was curious about the skinny rims... they claimed they were pushing the 1 3/8 back then trying to start a new trend, at least with the smaller riders. I guess I bought into it, LOL. These rims were carried over from my MCS I had before the DY. I agree though, they do kinda look out of place now.

Re: 1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

We had the same trend over here about 1985..We called them "skinnys" A lot of people used to raid there mothers shopper bikes' wheels to get the look! Then bend them first time out and put some arayas back on!! I think it looks great as it is! excellent work mate!! Cheers! Aaron97

Re: 1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

Wow, thanks! I actually changed up a few more things on it....  Araya 7X's with a set of Bullseye hubs, layback seat post and Aero seat. It's much more rider friendly now. And I DO ride it around Philly!

Here it is as she sits now.

Awesome bike.

Yeah, that look is pretty sick there. Just the JMC is so legendary... Man, that is some good stuff there... Darrell Young is the man..  I met him before and was down to earth and very cool.. Just like I hoped he'd be.. Be proud of that bike,

Re: 1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

Awesome!  Glad to see you upgraded the wheels to something you could ride on now.  No sense in having a bike that nice that you cant enjoy a ride on.

Re: 1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

i think your bike looks killer with the 1 3/8ths on. i use to run those in 83/84 and they made the bikes looks faster and they felt faster too. the bikes also sat taller with those 1 3/8ths. its really good to see you kept your bike all these years and remember dont ever get rid of it.

Re: 1984 JMC Racing Darrell Young

Bike looks great all shined up.

FWIW a lot of racers used the bigger rims in my area until the bulked up too much for them. I did for a time. They were nice and... zippy.
