it was amazing that raleigh still had a market for these bitd when bmx was booming.are you sure its an 87,im no expert but my mate had one of these for his birthday in 1980,raleigh updated the grifter mid eighties im sure,it came in black with red parts and had neon type writing, kind of even more bmx looking but they were never ever gonna pass as one!

Re: 1987 Raleigh Grifter

Great find and very nice condition!
My first new bike in 1977 was a Grifter just like yours (blue with Union Jack graphics).

Like markyp says yours is closer to 77 than 87, it's a MK1.
The seat doesn't look original (unless it was made for an overseas market) but everything else does.

I used to fold the front mudguard under so it made a noise like a motorbike (the downside being it wore a hole through it).

Re: 1987 Raleigh Grifter

You may well find that its actually a 77 bike as opposed an 87, as grifters were discontinued in 84 in favour of the bmx .

The bike its self is an american spec grifter , hence the twist grip in 3 stages as opposed to 3 colours , the chain guard as oppose to a plastic chain guard .
