1981 Team Mongoose
1981 Team Mongoose
All-chromoly Team Mongoose
I originally built this as a 'little brother' to my 1980 Moosegoose http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/mongoose/11663 - same cranks, post clamp, tires, black tuffs, etc. But with a coaster brake.
But my younger son complained about the coaster and didn't want it to look exactly like his brother's bike, so I listened... and upgraded him to blue ano Sumos with Suzue hubs, Maxy Cross cranks, and a DC MX brake. The Team 'goose probably deserved the spoke wheels and hand brake anyway. It rides super smooth and he loves it - that's what matters!
Thread about the 'brothers project' is here: http://bmxmuseum.com/forums/viewtopic.php?id=69150

Re: 1981 Team Mongoose
Nice looking bike. I just picked up a couple 81 Team Goose frames. I did some research the last few days. FYI yours is a 81 1/2 model. They made a mid year replacement. Easy to spot by its drop down rear dropouts. The 81 has the original type rear dropouts. The 81 is also 8 ounces heavier. Yours should weigh 5lbs 2 ounces. Love Team Goose.

Re: 1981 Team Mongoose
Thanks, and you're right about the dropouts. Its a Feb. 81 frame. Throughout early '81 there were all kinds of combinations of dropouts and brake bridges (1 or 3 holes) on the Teams & Supers and the only consistent feature was the flattened seatstay tube... Once they'd blown through all the old bridges & dropouts, the frames stayed the same until the gussets went away in mid-83.

Re: 1981 Team Mongoose
OK, my frames are even newer (April/May) and have the old style dropouts. Interesting. Strange. Great bike though ![]()
