1979 Redline MX-II
1979 Redline MX-II
NOS Late 1979 Redline MX-II, Fresh Out of the Box.
One of the last of the American made Redlines, this is a NOS MX-II, Serial # 34XXXX. A friend found a handful of frames at a shop a few years ago that had been stored (some in the original boxes) since the early 80s. This is the one I got from him and it looks like it was made yesterday.
The fork is also NOS but did not originally come with the frame, I picked it up later.
Also pictured is a NOS Redline "Brute" stem. I had assembled several NOS parts to build this and then realized I could never bring myself to bolt anything to a frame in such perfect condition, so it will stay as a frame/fork as long as I own it. One of my favorite pieces in my collection.

Sweet find!!
What makes you say that is a 1979?
It's not the kill, it's the thrill of the chase...

You know I have been told both late 79 and early 80, so I have always been a bit up in the air on what to call it.
The reasoning I have been given is the American made models (no redline stamp on the BB) with the 6 digit numbers started in 77 and ended in early to mid 1980. Its always been my understanding that the serials that started with 1 where 77, 2 where 78 and 3 were 79 and spilled into early 80 before being moved overseas. I was told this specific serial starting with 34 would put it in late 79 or early 80.
Please correct that if it is wrong as I really am not a Redline expert.

Serial is under the bottom bracket.
I don't have a pic of the serial from this exact frame on my comp, but here is a pic from another one of the Redline frames that my buddy got in the same score. The serial on mine is in the same place.

Re: 1979 Redline MX-II
Amazing. That thing was new 30 years ago! I think not building it is a good idea, save finding a dream stash of exactly the right parts for it. This FF combo was my entry into real bmx bikes. Still one of the besto looking frames, redline or other wise.
Faved.
Seriously considering a torker/redline midlife crisis project ^_^
