VDC made 1981 Traker MX 99% og

Bought this bike from vazquizzel. He found it with the original owner. The kid's dad had bought it for him new in 1981. Bike is a little strange. Most everything is stamped 1981 but the forks are June 1978 Tange TX500 decalled as Traker by the bike shop and wheels are steel with heavy gauge spokes and coaster brake (which is just odd for such a light race bike). It does have a freewheel conversion. I added bubble font Ame Rounds, a new chain and a stem pad as the bike had none of those things. Disassembled bike down to last nut and bolt and scrubbed and regreased everything.

1981 VDC made Traker built for Wisconsin Cycle
1978 Tange TX500 fork
VDC made Traker V bars
Mongoose gold stem
Tange headset
Tuf Neck seat post clamp
Kashimax seat
VDC Fluted seat post
Dia Comp MX1000 brake and lever and cable
Comp 2 tires
Kin Lin steel rims w/Chair hubs
Freewheel conversion
Ultra Dyno 170mm cranks (non drive arm has been changed)
Sugino 44t sprocket
KKT pedals
Izumi chain
Cal Lite pads

Re: VDC made 1981 Traker MX 99% og

coaster brake aint strange seeing how this is a kids bike. having a mongoose stem is strange. didnt most of these have SR stems?
maybe the bike show swiped the cooler looking traker forks?

needs tires. a nicer set of compe IIs would really make all the difference.

and reported.

These were only sold as frame and fork sets so the stem would be whatever the shop or customer wanted.

As far as rims, I just meant that all the parts are name brand light weight race pieces and then a set of steel coaster brake rims were used. Just seems odd.

Tires are the original tires to the bike. Why would I change them??

because they are wore out and rotten. so the question is why would you keep rotten tires on it?

Re: VDC made 1981 Traker MX 99% og

Early Trakers were available as completes, and I think they were offered throughout all the different gens. On the early ones they had 2 levels, I know there was a magazine test done in 1981 or 82 on them.

I have what is possibly the only Black Chrome Gen 1 frame set, it was given to a Traker sponsored rider out of Missouri. It is in unbelievably mint cond.!

Supposedly, all the other Black Chrome frame sets were Gen 2.

Nice survivor there, and yes an unusual choice of parts, given what was available in 1981-82. The forks were probably replaced after the orig Traker ones cracked. The early forks tended to do that.

Ok. Sorry. The literature I have show this as just a frame and fork and the only completes as bikes with gussetts. Good to know. Thanks.
