V brakes are the best thing that ever happened to canti mounts IMO.

Shimano DX -- always a good decision!

I agree, I've been using them regularly for 10 years now. The only problem I had was snapping a cable bolt (overtightened) - drilled it out and replaced it. Very dependable brakes.

They seem to be getting rarer now, but I see silver versions (BR-M600? same part# as DX?) that do not have the red paint and DX logo but look the same. If they're the same thing it would be a good way of getting them cheaper.

The cable bolt/clamp plate I replaced - that was quite hard to find (original Shimano), that's the only worry - finding spare parts. Maybe its a standard bolt though.

So what is the difference between a canti post and V post?

Really, V brakes ARE canti brakes with the exception of the cable running down one side instead of to the center.

Re: 90s canti, v, center pull. What are u runnin

Nothing different between the post.  One is center pull one is side pull.

Canti uses a canti mount.  V brake does not use it.....to it sort of becomes the useless bone at the bottom of your spine.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

I'll put my Vees up against any canti (or U brake) any day.

I used a Suntour cam brake. This has none of the foot clearance problems of a cantilever with much better geometry. It has much less friction than any of the so called V brakes. Since your frame already has a cable housing stay built in, you want to use that feature in the brake as it is a significant advantage.

No matter what brake you use, if you want decent feel, you are going to have to install a brake bridge brace. The seat stay tube diameter is tiny on most frames. They have no torsional stiffness to resist the reaction forces from the brake arms.

This brake won't work on canti/v posts. This uses 990/u brake posts, which are further forward on the frame. Different pivot points.

Those are very cool. They hardly come up for sale and when they do $$$

I was going to suggest the A brake. It took me a while to find one for less than $50, so when one finally came up, I jumped on it, even if the color wasn't my first choice.

Really vbrakes are vbrakes that use a noodle to allow for sidepull, vbrake arms tend to be longer than cantis. Cantis are cantis, some frames use a welded on brake cable stop for center pull, canti arms tend to be shorter than v's and more angle of pull hence the shape of cantis. hmm If your frame has a welded canti center cable housing stop, use it. The picture of the vbrake noodle on the canti guide is fukn awesome. lol
My paul vbrakes can kick your dads ass btw.

That's not the point.  Of course V is technically better than canti.  That's why the whole industry rapidly without looking back switched to V.  However, canti's look cool.  It's like...a crime not to use those wonderful canti mounts.

Re: 90s canti, v, center pull. What are u runnin

I would up buying some Shimanos. Haven't installed them yet. Having other issues with the build currently. I put a Chris King hs in it and it's too tall for how short the steer tube has been cut. So the top cap bolt won't even reach the star nut once the stem is installed. On top of that only about half the stem I would secure the fork. So I'm at an impasse. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/18023/img_105359b1d4610e.jpg

Additionally the bottom cup won't seat all the way due to how the head tube was milled. They didn't mill it deep enough for haw tall the cup is. There is about 7/8" of steer tube sticking out. http://uploads.bmxmuseum.com/user-images/18023/img_107159b1d53778.jpg

Cups are not all created equal. Some fit deeper than others to help prevent ovalizing your head tube. I would look into a cup with a smaller skirt.

Man, that fork either has a short steerer tube or that frame has a long head tube!

Yeah probably a combo of both. I think I'm actually gonna unload this project for another one.
