The "Official Unofficial Schwinn Predator" Thread

So as a lot of you may or may not know, I am a Schwinn guy... More specifically, a Predator guy... I have been since Oct. of '82 when my dad bought me my first real BMX bike, a 1983 Schwinn Predator Cr-Mo Free model... We originally went to that particular shop because they had a Kuwahara KZ-1 left over from the previous year and that's what I REALLY wanted, or so I thought... After my dad saw the $500 price tag on the year-old Kuwi, he started looking for another option... After looking at a couple of different bikes, he calls over a sales guy and asks "What's the difference between these 2 bikes?", pointing at the Kuwi and a brand new Predator Cr-Mo Free... The sales guy takes a second or 2 to reply, "The name and the price, other than that, nothing." We were in a Schwinn shop, therefore, I just figured he was trying to convince us that a Schwinn was as good as a Kuwahara and I "knew better"... Well, after listening to this guy's sales pitch, my dad was convinced and I was convinced that my dad just bought a huge sack-o-crap from the salesman and there was NO WAY that Predator was as good as a KZ-1... Well, it was the Predator or nothing at that point, so home I went with a brand new, in the box, 1983 Schwinn Predator Cr-Mo Free model... We got home and started putting the bike together... I would pull parts out, inspect them then hand them to my dad to put on the bike... As I'm checking out all of the parts, I realized that all the parts were top of the line parts, and a full 100% cro moly frame, "hey this really is a good bike" was the thought that overwhelmed my brain for about a minute or so... I could go on with the details of this story, but I'd rather get to the point of this thread... PREDATOR LOVE!!! A place to show-off, discuss and glorify what I believe is the most under-rated BMX bike of ALL TIME, the Schwinn Predator... I have a few of them and the first one I want to post is my '83 Cr-Mo Free Predator... This is a tribute to my childhood bike... My original one had the yellow/green Atari style decals, this one has some home-made copy decals in red/blue... Also, this one is not era correct, but hardly any of my bikes are... The bike that brought back all of those memories for me, my '83 Cr-Mo Free...

PLEASE post up ANYTHING Predator... Any mag ads, any parts lists, catalogs, personal bikes, ANYTHING Predator... I would like to have ALL Predator models and years represented here, so PLEASE, if you are a Schwinn guy or a Predator guy, share your pix and info with us here... big_smile  I have a few more Predators to post here and will soon... WELCOME!!! big_smile

Re: The "Official Unofficial Schwinn Predator" Thread

No offence as I do own several Schwinns "26ers".

Bmx dealers in the city I grew up brainwashed us kids to want Norcos and DB's and Kuwi's. No one had a Schwinn distribution licence where I grew up I guess, so we didn't know what were missing.

I didn't think so either until I got my first one as you have read... The same 4130 cr-mo tubing used to make the Kuwaharas at that time was used to make the '83 & '84 model Predators and the parts that came stock on the Predators were just as good as the ones that came on the Kuwaharas... HIGH QUALITY bikes at entry level prices... Everyone should own a Predator... big_smile

Re: The "Official Unofficial Schwinn Predator" Thread

Love it...I was just thinking yesterday about how many of my friends had predators growing up. I was always a redline guy but I can think of 4 friends who had predators in our immediate group, including one who had a baby blue freestyle bike with white mags and an acs rotor, I forget the model but this kid always kept everything perfectly immaculate. He never did any tricks or anything, he just cruised around on it and cleaned it. Crazy kid.

Re: The "Official Unofficial Schwinn Predator" Thread

A Predator that I got for free. It's an 86 or 87. All original except for the tires and grips, which I replaced. Chain guard and reflectors are all still there too. My 9 year old daughter rides it and loves it.

Re: The "Official Unofficial Schwinn Predator" Thread

Schwinns have always been great bikes for the price point, but they suffered from not being "cool."

It goes for their MTB and Road bikes as well.

Used to be into Old school race bikes, now im only into Mid school Haros for the most part.

Never owned a predator.  I had an ~'89 Phantom, and that thing was dope.

Very nice example.  I've got to believe that the majority of the Chicagoland's remaining Predators either were or still can be found in The Pull...tongue

I think I might have seen that thread a while back, and I was actually looking for an existing Predator thread before I started this one... Hopefully "Freedo" does stop by to say hi...

My 97 Predator Pro. This is the bike that got me back into BMX, it was my brother in-laws bike and @ 2005 the in-laws asked me if I wanted it. It was complete at the time. I've tinkered with it a little bit lollol

different bars.... I'm always tinkering with it. But this shot is a little more clear. FBM and LANDING GEAR and SCHWINN. It's like chili.
