its not a big tube fork. its the same fork on the changas.

Same size tubing and the crown is welded the same but VDC drop outs are different, the axel slot faces forward and drop out is more round.

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

The fork is a Robinson fork that became available late in 1982 and was available for a few years. The stickers used on them said Robinson Pro. The typical Robinson fork with the std. size tubing became Std.

I was told by a former Robinson sponsored rider that Chuck got extremely pissed that Hutch had basically stolen his frame geometry and basic design. So he made some gusset-less Robinson frames, including 24" cruisers, for some team members to take to east coast and mid-west races. He also had some team riders at those races on regular "R" gusset Robinson including a couple 24" cruisers....REALLY RARE! Cruisers were not even something that Robinson offered at the time!!!

All the above mentioned frames were absolutely decaled as Robinson as Chuck intended to prove a point and make Hutch look like the copycat!!

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

So in other words, if it is a Robi, those stickers aren't original on the OP's bike.

It is interesting to see how small and "integrated" all these BMX companies were.  I've loved learning about the history as an old fart.  Funny, Hutch got ticked off when Profile copied their design....

My shipping is going to stink from 9/20-9/27...as in ....it's not going to happen.  I'll have spots of no communication, but will mostly be available to discuss.

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Could someone have removed the original Robby decals and put VDC decals? The paint appears to be original. I do not see any remnants of old decals either. Very interesting... keep it coming.

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

The one picture that shows the fork dropout with part of the decal scraped off has me convinced that the VDC decals have been on there since day 1. No doubt this ones a mystery!?!

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

Anyone know where the serial numbers are located on VDC's and what sequence was used? According to my serial number its a possibility that a batch of 50 were made.

Mostly on outside of left dropout. Upside down above axle slot. Could vary though.   Month/Year/Sequence of production.  0184001= Jan 84 #1 bike. Not exactly positive if this carried thru all of VDC products.

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

The forks definitely look like regular VDC that you would find on a Changa, for example.

Yes, that's what it looks like. What does that specify?

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

This frame DOES NOT have a "Machined" BB. It DOES have a Simulated Machined Head Tube, it has rings pressed over the ends. mid 80's GT, Patterson, Robinson, Dyno, and others had these as well.  I also believe VDC used this Simulated Machined Head Tube design on some of the frames he made.

Oh okay, can you describe a machined BB? The ends of the BB are thinner to allow for the cups.. the center has a lip... I just thought machined.

Re: 1980 Robinson Decaled as VDC

A "Machined" BB has thicker ends. Would look like the frame's headtube.
