1999 Haro SR 71

I'd never seen a red SR 71 before... so I knew I had to build one!

This frame was originally the SR 71 candy-type blue color.
Whatever that paint or powdercoat that Haro used on these frames was, it was super resilient,
and a bastard to strip!
Anyways, I chose bright red for the frame's new color for 2 reasons -
Firstly, as already mentioned, I'd never seen a red one before,
and secondly, the plan always was to run the red DX brakes on this frame.
Now, usually the DX brakes stand out like the proverbial dog's balls on any frame they're on...
not that that's a bad thing, don't get me wrong - I like that on certain builds.
But as red was such a predominant color on this scoot, I wanted the brakes to look like they grew there,
as if they were part of the frame.
The Flight forks were an easy choice - although they're Redline, they're from the same era, and in keeping with the aircraft (SR 71) theme.
Pedals 'n hubs are also Shimano DX.
Mid school basics.
Hoops are Mavic X Sup.
Spokes are black & nips are silver.
I originally laced the wheels in stainless spokes & black nips, but they didn't look right to me that way.
FSA Afterburner cranks... yep, you guessed it... aircraft imagery.
Profile spider, Azonic chainring, SDG Bel Air chair, Titec chair altitude extender and ATI Jackson hand grabbers.
FSA stem & spacers, Cane Creek headset, Haro bars, Panaracer FreeFire rubber hoop protectors.
The (silver) machined reliefs in the black ano of the cranks, stem & seat clamp all tie in together.
So there ya go - tons of bright, tons of red & tons of mid school !

Re: 1999 Haro SR 71

Outstanding build Baz !!!  I love the SR-71's. Definitely one of my favorite frames. It looks great, all dressed up in red with the Redline triple's. I'm really diggin the crank set up. Radical stuff...
Looks like you built it for Sammy Hagar.   "The Red  Rocker ????"  big_smilebig_smilebig_smile

Thanks, Chris!
I also reckon these SR 71 frames are too cool... the only way they would be cooler is if they were made in a 24" version cool
Anyways, yes, I reckon Sammy Hagar would be pretty happy with this build... he was rockin' away in the red room while I was buildin' it big_smile

Very nice bike. The Shimano DX components are immaculate. I forgot all about those hubs. They are a nice find.

Re: 1999 Haro SR 71

Thanks Jabroni big_smile
I've always liked that DX groupset - the brakes are reasonably ubiquitous, the hubs a bit less, the pedals are the least common of the three.
