1979 Kent

Kent BMX Banana Seater

I got this Kent BMX Banana Seater for Christmas 1979. It was not only my first BMX bike, but I'm pretty sure it was my first bike with inflatable tires as I remember my previous bike having solid, hard rubber tires.  I remember getting yelled at about 20 minutes after this picture was taken by my dad for trying to ride between my dad and my neighbor who were talking in the street. It was too tight a squeeze and I sent them reeling back to avoid getting smashed into.  Good times. That's my little bro (Stymie on here) with his Spider-Man remote control car.  He's a couple of years away from getting the BMX bug still...then one day my Dad brings him a Huffy Rawhide from the grocery store and the rest is history. smile  That's right, he got his bike from the grocery store, but it served him well.  I'm not sure what happened to this Kent, but it provided some great memories for me.

Thanks freedo...I was just looking at this old bike again and had to laugh at the seat stays. They look so thin, like they're made of pipe cleaners.

Re: 1979 Kent

so, this is my brother Mike (Stymie), the little one in red in the first picture above,  probably about 7-8 years later showing his stuff...

this was on our friend's bike. we never knew what it was. Probably a dept. store bike, only thing we remember was that it had "F.B.C" on the rear dropout and he used to jokingly claim it stood for Freestyle Bike Company. smile

Re: 1979 Kent

Cool picture and story. Reminds me of when I was a kid riding with my brother Jesse (China). I remember getting a gold Huffy and for some odd reason he got a chrome Webco from a friend. Don't know what happened to both bikes. Later on a got a red team Mongoose and he got a Redline Proline. Going to dig up some photos of us.

Re: 1979 Kent

Yeah, those sure were some good memories.  The crazy thing is that a lot of my best memories were on that grocery store banana seater.  A few years later I got an '85 Kuwahara Bravo. Of course I loved it, but I only had it for a few months before it was stolen.  You know kids just riding together in the summer...when we would stop somewhere we just all dumped our bikes on the ground, no chains or locks.  Great thing is I've been able to mostly build up that Kuwi again and hope to post it on the museum soon.  Now I just need to find that Rawhide! big_smile

I'm still looking everyday...a couple have popped up across the country but haven't been able to move quick enough.  Some day people will be talking about the legend of the gold-plated Rawhide rather than gold-plated Trickstar!  or not... smile
