1983 CW Phaze 1 24
1983 CW Phaze 1 24
Judging by this website these are pretty rare to come across. I've had mine since '90 with all the same parts except for the wheels.
I found it in a pawn shop in '90 and knew what it was. I had been wanting one of these(a 20" though) since I was reading mags back in '80's. The mgr. wanted $350 for it ,but I told him the wheels were useless to me. Even through high school I was 6'2" and @200lbs and the 1 3/8" rims with sew ups weren't gonna cut it. Eventually I was able to talk him down to $250 since I was gonna have to spend another $100 on wheels. I never got that second set of wheels. I just cruised around on it gently since I was usually rippin' it up on my 20". In '96 now married with a boy ready to start racing I bought a Free Agent racing cruiser and a couple a years later Schwinn's first aluminum race cruiser so i could race with him. So every once in a while I'd swap wheels so I could roll around on the CW without fear of taco'ing the wheels. Fast forward 11 years 2 knee surgery's (2nd, complete rebuild minus 60% of cartilage) and in my 2nd marriage....I'll never learn. During those 11 years I pulled the wheels off and put them in storage along with a ton of BMX parts(anyone remember MKS graphite pedals I had alot of gems like those) and memorabilia and other misc.crap. After several years of paying storage fees and jobless I just let it go. BTW those wheels were laced up to those trick Hutch hubs radial laced...damn they were nice. Okay, a month ago a buddy of mine turned me onto this site and the Frankenbike guys in Austin. There was a get together one weekend that concentrated on the old cruisers. So I went out to my leaky old shed where the carcass has been sitting for 10 years cut off the rusted solid chain put on a new one and the wheels from my Schwinn and had a blast ridin' that day and seeing all the old school stuff there. I was suprised at how good of shape everything except the chain was in. No crusty bearings or squeaks from the neck,I just had to recondition the Oddysey brake pads and polish her up and it was good to go. Maybe now I'll get that set of wheels for it.

Man, thats a really cool story and a really cool bike. I like it alot.
There is a 24" Phase 1 frame and fork set that has sold twice during the past year on eBay for around $3.5K. If this is the real deal, with the Hutch pedals, you might own the most expensive bike on the site.
Sweet ride.

Re: 1983 CW Phaze 1 24
Caleb, as you can see it's not the factory paint. I used to see this bike and owner around town occasssionally when i was still in high school(he was several years older) The previous owner had painted it, and i had seen it at on time with a three speed set up when I use to ride the Hotter Than Hell 100 (on my PL -20) in Tx. Anyhow when I go to refinish it ,not sure I wanna paint or chrome it, I'll have it sanblasted carefully or I'll chemically strip it myself because right now the paint is too thick to see the #. After seeing all the posts and comments on these bikes and about the copies made I want to verify it myself. Although I seriously doubt somebody would have went to the trouble to build a copy back in '87 and then "give" it to a pawn shop. I'll let you know when I get it done.
