1990 Diamondback Formula 1

Diamond Back / Shimano Velo Bike

I know this isn't a BMX bike - but it was the damnest thing I'd ever seen so I bought it. After looking thru the museum at the DB section - I figured I'd submit this just because of how insane it is. I don't know what year it is - I put 1990 because that was a good year to put... It has a 5speed and is a 20" frame size, 3pc cranks, aero wheel and sprocket covers, etc. You were all forward-leaning when riding this bike. It was pretty fast in top gear. - Saylor

you could do endo's for blocks on that bike...i like it, its different and im sure you can fly on that setup.

when i see a mongoose at walmart, i try and picture the metal being used to make something more useful, like a frying pan, or maybe some clothes hangers...oh well...its out of my hands.

my bikes are tri-moly. that means i have 3 times more chromo than you..haha

That is from the MID80's. I know that several companies made them. HARO, Schwinn,Hutch, to name a few. They were actually raced in parking lots, kind of like an F-1 racer.
I had the Schwinn Qualifyer which Iwe would ride down the canyons. The gearing was something like a 60 front with a very tight 65 or 6 speed cluster.

Duck, ask and I'll try... The Schwinn is on the top of the page. There is a HARO version in the Museum. I know where one is at, not sure if the guy wants to sell it I'll see in the spring, as he goes on vacation for the first 3 months of the year, must be nice ..

Re: 1990 Diamondback Formula 1

I just picked up one today and love it!  A very fast bike.... not mint, but in good overall condition.  Im going to try and clean it up even more, and might look for some NOS parts to replace my worn pedals, grips, and tires.

These are Killer!!!

Re: 1990 Diamondback Formula 1

I know this would be even farther from BMX!
but one of these frames with a straight fork, narrow deep V rims & tires, fixed rear hub & cog, pista bars & quill stem ect. would be cool!
A mini track/velodrome bike or"FIXIE"!
With a fixed rear sprocket & being that small, you could do some gnarly tricks with it!
I HAVE A BROTHER, 20 YEARS MY Jr, SO I AM NOW HIP TO HIS GENERATION OF BIKE BUILDING TOO,
& SOME OF THE TRICKS THESE KIDS CAN PULL OFF ON A FIXED GEAR ROAD BIKE IS AMAZING!

1st  bmx= used 77' Ashtabula...sold to buy "HAULER"
2nd bmx= new  85' SE RACING Toby Henderson "HAULER"...stolen
3rd  bmx= new  85' SE RACING "PK RIPPER"...sold when turned 16

Re: 1990 Diamondback Formula 1

I've owned the General Meerkat and one just like this one. Both were great bikes. Ended up selling both of them off after they collected dust for too long.

Re: 1990 Diamondback Formula 1

I know this is a really old thread but I had to join and post. I got this bike new in 1991 or so in the red/black colorway. It was hanging in the rafters of my local bike shop for a while by that time. I rode the hell out of it for about 4 years. Ended up breaking the stem, I assume because of the constant forward lean. It was really fun to ride and cruising at top gear felt like I was flying. Had a mini disc break too.
