This could speed things up with the vent holes. They are cheap on ebay and work on plastic.

so, have you tried heating the handlebar ears to get the curve? How'd it come out?

Yes, carefully heating with a heat gun will work. Just don't over heat.

Re: DIY - Mop Bucket Number Plate tutorial - complete with templates!!!

I'm on it! One thing that can really help is if someone actual has a plate and is willing to give me any dimension such as the height or width. This makes it a heck of a lot easier to scale the plate properly to the bars.

Re: DIY - Mop Bucket Number Plate tutorial - complete with templates!!!

So I just printed a Haro style plate out. I printed to legal size paper, then folded it in half and increased the copy size to 120% to get the right size and made 4 copies, two on each side, moving the original around the copy glass to get all 4 corners. I taped the pieces together to make a full plate size template. It worked good.

Earlier today I found two surplus, black plastic buckets. cool Now I have a cheap project for my days off!

If this goes without too much aggravation, I'll do a cruiser plate too.

I'll post pics when I get going. What a fun project!

Re: DIY - Mop Bucket Number Plate tutorial - complete with templates!!!

Very impressed!

Hutch Fun Facts: All main line Hutch's with digits only S/N (no letters or baseballs) on the rear drop outs were US made and had their dropouts stamped between late '83 and '86.  Obviously the frame manufacture would occur slightly after that, even if they just threw 'em in a bucket randomly.  There is an obvious date code in that the first 2 digits seem to be the month and the 3rd digit is pretty obviously the last digit of the year running from '83-'86.

Re: DIY - Mop Bucket Number Plate tutorial - complete with templates!!!

I got the blank cut out today, it came out pretty good. The bucket wasn't as good as it looked at work, but it'll do. I taped the profile of the plate to the bucket material and went at it with a jigsaw. I tried to err on the side of caution, and left a little extra material, then came back with some sandpaper on a block and took the extra off. The whole process took about a half hour.

I have a little plunge router guard attachment for my Dremel, I'll see if I have a 1/4 inch router bit tomorrow.

Re: DIY - Mop Bucket Number Plate tutorial - complete with templates!!!

I'm all bout the plate bout plate no trouble

I'm all bout the bout the plate no trouble. Hahaha wrong song. I got bored today was in lowes and this thread came to mind when I saw the buckets so 4.50 later we have plates.  I was able to get two plates per bucket by taking lacquer thinner on a paper towel and it wiping the print right off. Don't soak it just keep wiping over and using the clean side of the towl soaked with it.
