Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

I’ve been on the look-out for an early Free Agent for some time and recently picked this one up on eBay. At first I thought the unusual paintwork was a spray-bomb job but now I’m not so sure. I think the decals are era-correct and are also in the condition you’d expect after 30 years. This is also an early frame set (the 8-digit serial - on the non-drive side dropout - is 1284****) so was either built by VDC or by Brad Shoup in Buena Park in Dec 1984. I’m leaning towards the latter as I think VDC were shutting up shop around that time. I’m therefore wondering whether this was a special paint job for a customer or even a factory team rider. The tt length is 19 1/8” from centre of the headtube to the centre of the seat mast so I think that makes it a Pro. There is no chainstay brace.

http://i1132.photobucket.com/albums/m572/Trident393/Free%20Agent/FA072.jpg

The frame set also came with some bars, which are 27 ½” wide with a rise of 8 9/16” to the centre of the stem area. Looking at others I've seen on here I think they're genuine FA pros. They're also green though a slightly different shade from the frameset, so perhaps they were bought and/or painted separately.

Anyone got any thoughts on any or all of the above?

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

I'm sure green was a stock option but i heard they would paint any colour the customer wanted.i have an
89 in baby blue that was too far gone to save and when i stripped it,it was chrome underneath.

That looks awesome, I think that I wouldnt touch anything on it. Would look killer with all polished and chrome parts.

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm leaning towards it being og paint as well, which is why I'm going to leave it well alone, including that yellow JT Racing sticker! smile

I also have spare silver/chrome and black parts lying around, so will build it up with those and see how it looks and rides!

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

I've just noticed this green Skyway in the latest batch of submitted bikes:-

http://bmxmuseum.com/bikes/skyway/79812

Looking through the other Skyways on here, it seems that green was a stock colour on the '85 Street Beats and since it looks a very similar green to that on the FA, I'm wondering if the og owner liked the look of the Skyway green and ordered the same colour. That would tie-in date-wise, since the FA was probably sold in '85. All speculation I know, but it makes for a good story! big_smile In any event, that Street Beat is giving me ideas for which direction to go on my build, so thanks Meltdown for posting it! smile

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

Back in 1984 I was sent a frame and fork set (Limo) along with a helmet, and jersey with a letter asking if I would like to be sponsored by Free Agent. I spoke with a gentleman, I do not recall his name but he assured me factory team status and he did ask me if I would prefer,"NEW hott retro colors instead of chrome.
I was such a devoted CW fan I declined the offer to hold out for CW not knowing the true status of CW: ( I really did like the frame especially being a LIMO I am 110% certain that lime green, hott pink, pastel blue and orange were the top offerings besides chrome.

Nice seeing a painted frame. OPCs are another plus with me.

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

Thanks for the comments guys! Someone else mentioned a spider and chainring, so when I get a silver ring I'll swap out the CD disc and see what it looks like. The bike's now submitted to the Museum:-

Very cool Free Agent!

I can't wait to build mine, but it's just plain ol' chrome.

+1 on a different sprocket. The CD looks too freestyle to me. Cool bike though.

Re: Factory Free Agent - fact or fiction?

Yeah, I kind of regret using it now, though it was all I had going spare at the time and was in similar condition to the rest of the bike, so on it went. I've since done a bit of research on them and they were a stock part on the later DB Strike Zones, which reinforces the freestyle feeling. You live and learn, eh. smile

I guess it's a 1989. I'm surprised it has the script decals instead of the squared font for '89 but they're obviously original. Yes the drops are pretty chewed, but that's OK it will still make a nice rider.
