Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

Maybe some of the members from Australia could help?

They have a huge OS BMX scene and would know where to send parts out for chrome/anno/polish etc.

Looks like a great project, though I would media blast the wheels. smile

Clean them up. Sprocket is an Ashtabula. Cover is way too beat up. But definitely a contender for media blast project. The crank! Thought it was chrome. It was rusted like hell. Duhh..

What do I do?
Media blast the sprock cover and use them?
The crank...will it be polish or should I just beg someone for a replacement.

Question. When I remove them, theres some glue like residue. What are those? I need to put them before I fix the head and BB right?

Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

looking at those forks, they might be redline forks.
if  the cap ends welded are welded then u have a nice set of old school redline forks.... hopefully they will be nickel under the purple.

Yup. It is a redline with the end welded. Better than Tange? I know no shits about all this stuff.
And if it's an old school Redline, what's the size of the stem? Was think of changing the head but I don't know what size is the race.

I would paint the cranks flat black and not use the sprocket cover... Just my opinion... If you do use it I would also paint that flat black... Very good work so far...

Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

A little help guys.
I drop the parts in vinegar and salt mixture for 1 1/2 days. The rusted cranks looks like out from the box smile but some parts of my internals for the coaster set turn black and rusted!!!
I know I shouldn't left it for too long but I tot vinegar remove rust not make the parts more rusted than before. The clutch assembly turns totally black and when I wipe it, it was like totally hard rust.

Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

If I cant get the rust clean, I might have to give up on the coaster brake. I mean having the parts rusted makes my heart ache. I tried scrubbing it with steel wool but it seems that the metals has been eaten up. sad

Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

wheels...its still black. dipp it in boiling water in my mums cooking pot. put some yellow dye and salt and its still black.
bought 2 cans of yellow spray.
2 cans of gold spray. now thinking of the color im going to spray them with.
I manage to get the bendix dremeled. got a pal asking the chrome shop if they can plate it. if not then I just have to live with the rust. maybe just put lots of grease and hope their smooth.

Re: Heres to my 78 Mongoose restoration ( Goodluck! )

I use white lithium grease or hi-temp auto grease...

Here's a link for the Mongoose decals...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mongoose-old-sc … 3a808e3dd3

And one for the Redline decals...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Redline-1981-Ca … 338d40e271

I'm by no means suggesting you buy those, but pics for reference... I'm sure someone here can help out with decals...
