NOS Norco Starfire Found…

Since getting back into the BMX scene, I have really enjoyed collecting many vintage parts and pieces that I remember coveting as a kid. Being able to obtain the rare pieces that we would only see in magazines back then, is a thrill and brings me back to my youth. For the past 5 years, while searching for a select list of frames and parts I wanted to collect, I have always been on the watch for a certain frame that remains very special to me. The Norco Starfire. A top of the line race bike, from a local Canadian bike company. In 1982 I got one, and it was my first BMX bike. Being a Canadian only model, there is very little information on these bikes. From my research, the Starfire came in three sizes. Mine is the smaller size frame, which I'm very fortunate to still have. Well used and decals long ago removed, It is one of my prized possessions. My search has always been to find a pro size frame, in mint condition with original decals. With so few around, it's been a long wait for one to surface. Recently I was extremely fortunate to find a '83 Starfire in NOS condition. It was a "needle in a haystack" moment. It is now in my collection and I am confident to say, it's the only Norco Starfire that has never been built. The headset and bottom bracket bearing cups were installed by Norco and then the frame was shipped to a sponsored rider in eastern Canada. Shortly after receiving the frame, the guy started riding for GT, and so the frame was never built. It remained in his possession until I purchased it. Unfortunately the frame is missing the rare Tange ARX fork for the longer 4 3/4" head tube, so the search is on. I hope the Norco guys like it, and the rest appreciate it.

Re: NOS Norco Starfire Found…

Very nice score Colin!

I had a Starfire during my youth when I was riding heavily, funny thing was,I never knew what it was until like 15 years later.

My only complaint about the Starfire were the dropouts, they were weak and I tweaked them a bunch up times.

Sick! I'll keep an eye out for those forks, I've come across a few sets not sure of the steer tube length though. RAD find though, Congrat's

Re: NOS Norco Starfire Found…

Cool bike, congrats. Why not have the frame doc modify an ARX fork so it'll fit? Sounds like an og fork would be nonexistent, a modified one would be appropriate and the next best thing.

Re: NOS Norco Starfire Found…

Thanks for all the great comments and interest! I've returned all the PM's. Still looking for the forks and looking for the Norco pro bars and Starfire pads as well. Yes Neil, the dropouts are thin, which adds to the lightness of the frame I'm guessing. I hope to have this rolling by July for the show!! big_smile

Colin.

Colin.

I'm looking forward to seeing it completed Colin.

As for the thin dropouts, when tightening the rear wheel nuts, don't crank down on them too hard or else the bottom of the dropouts will pull down/up....ask me how I know lol.

Re: NOS Norco Starfire Found…

Hey Colin....
I'm pretty sure their in fact was only one size for '83...but the team was "testing" frames through the summer of 83 in anticipation of releasing the 84's. The 84 models were the Team frame like yours, and the ZL.... Pete Zablotny's signature frame.

Here are some pics from the 84 catalog.
