1997 GT Speed Series Team

Polished aluminium frame, unrestored.

Picked this up last week as a one owner with very little use. Gave it a polish, some new tires, and new handgrips.
This is my first BMX (in 20 years), and is very exciting. Any info, elaboration on the bike would be appreciated.
I bought it to ride, but have since decided to 'shelf it', and hang it on a wall for display

awesome ride! Have one myself . Fast bike, great components!  Those are Spin wheels carbon fiber $399 retail . your bike may be a 1997 , it has a cantilever hanger. 1998's do not. If I'm right the frame should have been sent back for the recall. So its a keeper

Re: 1997 GT Speed Series Team

wow, thats nice....

that bike right there was the most expensive GT bmx bike in 97....my catalog with dealer quote says $1200!!

sprocket should be black not red..but looks good that way

oh, and it is a 1997 by the way.  the 96's had different speed series decals ...the 98's had similar decals but the "box" decal on the back chain stay is different...the one on yours matches the 97 model

Re: 1997 GT Speed Series Team

Did you replace the decals on this bike?  I'm trying to figure out correct ones, and these are a little different than most I see.

Re: 1997 GT Speed Series Team

I have a 97 gt speed series team xl as well and mine has the built in seat clamp and this one does not, its all original and i was about to trade it for a 300 dollar road bike, but after all of this 1 0f 100 talk with msrp in the 4 digits i think ill hold on to it seeing as i got it for only 60 bucks on c-list. tongue Let me know if you know anything about the seat clamp maybe its prior recall thing. I have no clue. old gt's are top shelf!

Re: 1997 GT Speed Series Team

i remember seeing the box series in 1996 when i was 14. i was looking at the gary turner from 1977 with the welded seat post and noticed the dropouts. i havnt seen them again up until the box series bikes. awesome bike, i have a 84-85 performer and would like to buy more old gt stuff.

Re: 1997 GT Speed Series Team

I had a 97 that had box stays. I believe that was the year they recalled them. I still have mine replacement frame. I had 3 of these frames total from 97-98. One I sold to my neighbor, the other I sent back & I still have the last one is hanging in the garage with a set of Spins.
