Re: GT Serial Number Info

I saw Gary Turner yesterday at a bike show and got to chat with him for a while as he signed my PFTs. I asked him about the FS stamp on some of the bikes and he told me that it means FreeStyle. He told me he had the different model bikes stamped (M1, 24, XL, etc) to make it easy on the dealers as they would have a lot of frames hanging and sometimes they wouldn't know which was which just by looking at a frame. Why not every single FreeStyle bike got the stamp, well, as we all know, back then there wasn't as much QC at the facilities and some stuff got missed. Hope this helps clear the FS mystery!! big_smile

Re: GT Serial Number Info

Thats awesome Aleks! Now your PFTs are signed by the man himself, wow how cool is that! I guess that supports the info I have posted here.

I guess I'm still confused.Have I been living a lie all these year?Racing my pro series but it actually has the specs of a freestyle bike? What bikes besides the PP did gt make in 84 that would be stamped FS?

I am sure you have a Pro Series. The chances of you having a Pro Performer stickered as a PS and not knowing and hearing about it is near none. If by some chance that happened the only GT freestyle in 84 was the Pro Performer.Pics?

Re: GT Serial Number Info

You have an 88 Pro Performer/PFT. The 2 looks like a mistake, just ignore that. The model abbreviations only came on Santa Ana made bikes so not having the FS just means they either forgot to stamp it or it was probably made in Huntington Beach.

I have just been obsessed with GTs since I was like 8 or 9 and have seen more of these things than I can count. I have also communicated alot of theories with other people and weve used a process of elimination to prove all these theories wrong or right. Along the way reading a ton of GT ads w/specs, catalogs, videos, going over countless serials of every kind of GT out there. Plus reading posts and info from employees of GT and other GT heads. Btw the Robinsons are actually made by the same factories that made GTs so they have the same serials for the most part along with Powerlite and Dyno.  Here was the post from an employee that helped me out the most to fully understand serials.

Re: GT Serial Number Info

so disregard the first digit huh? did they make errors like this often?
can you take a crack at these two s/n #'s ? wierd to have two frames with both serials so close to one another. ones a dyno maybe vfr, other a gt maybe an interceptor
dyno s/n:kg1k09641
gt     s/n:kg1k09681

They both look like 92 models made in November 91. Yeah when there making as many bikes as they were theyre going to make errors.

Re: GT Serial Number Info

Hi all,

can somebody help me with the code on my frame?

It says G5H00392.

Referring to djd93306's first post it's made in Japan in august '85. But what model is this? Performer?
Here's i picture of the bike.

Yup August 85 is the build date, looks like it came from the factory as a Pro Performer based on the components.

Ah, I didn't mention that nearly nothing is original but the cranks and the ..ehm. thing where the steering wheel is mount on. I've got a lack of words sry *_* The original rims were manufactured by ACS model RL Edge, the brakes by DiaComp.

here's an ruff idea how to change/tune the MASTER LIST by years of frame design and then race vs. freestyle models serial for those years after:

PM original "other thread" poster or hellmutt and have change original "GT Serial Cheat Sheet" to "What year GT Frame do I have?(I am too lazy to check the new serial post)" and a link to this, make it a new sticky).
_______________________________________________________________

1. 74-80 GT Frames - Most likely you won't find one with a serial number, including "Pedals Ready" (submit info if you have and it will be added to master serial list please, can be broken down by pics or links to ads/bikes)

2. 81-82 GT Frames - Serial # on inside of right rear dropout. 81-82 (81-83 and early 84s are considered Santa Ana (Award) Design):
They do not show an obvious 2 digit number. For Example: 52765 = 5 for the 5th month May. 2 for the year 82, number 765.
Under Serial number will be a model #: JR = Junior, 3=Expert (17.5" TT), 4 =PRO 18.5" Standard - measure top tube, if longer it is an ordered XL, - 24/26=Cruiser(Not sure of Letter Code_______?) Note: Skinny down tube and EURO BB applicable to these years.

3. 83-Early 84 GT Frames (considered Santa Ana (Award) Design)
They show an obvious 2 digit number. For Example: 083765 = ___________________________________(made up #)
Under Serial number will be a model #: JR = Junior, 3=Expert (17.5" TT), 4 =PRO 18.5" Standard - measure top tube, if longer it is an ordered XL, - 24/26=Cruiser(Not sure of Letter Code?)

3=Expert is incorrect. The expert frames are designated with the number 2. This goes for 81-82 and 83 to Early 84's. Some 24inch cruisers for these years were stamped 24, and others were stamped 4. The GT 26's, as far as I am aware, weren't stamped with a model number. GT did make a junior 24 in late 82 through 83/84, and I believe (but it hasn't been confirmed) that these were stamped with a 2 (being that they were an "Expert" sized cruiser.). These junior cruisers were built in VERY limited numbers. I've yet to see one, but I have heard a bit about them.

I have a 1981 GT Junior frameset (stamped JR), a 1983 GT Expert (stamped 2), a 1983 GT Pro (stamped 4), a 1982 GT 24 (stamped 4) and a 1981 GT 26 (not stamped with a model number)

Don't quote "facts" unless you have info to back it up. Assumption starts with those three letters for a reason....

Has anyone else noticed the huge drop in "Help me with my GT serial #" posts since I posted this list? That used to be 50% of the posts in the name it section. Not anymore, theres very few of them now days. wink
