1980 Toowoomba Bicycle Company Cobra Pro

The LixBMX 'RAWR' Custom Pro

The Toowoomba Bicycle Company's original release of the 'Cobra Pro' consisted of a Diamondback TK frame by Koizumi (Centurion gusset version - identical to the Pro Star A-Series and Centurion Force) with matching Koizumi forks.
This old 1980 frame set (complete with Koizumi forks) came to me mid 2012 in need of some serious TLC with a few bends here and there (which I've managed to pull out) and its fair share of rust. Uninspired to restore it to its original spec, color and artwork, it sat in my garage for a good 8months until the Pushies Galore bike show here in Brisbane Australia announced their 2013 BMX Build-Off competition in May. With the Build-Off rules stipulating DIY refinishing only and no 'name brands' this seemed like the perfect opportunity to breath new life into the Cobra Pro.

So, after a mad 2 months, 50+ hours of designing, filing, sanding, polishing, clearcoating, airbrushing, stitching, fabricating and assembling, with just one week to spare before the 2013 Pushies Galore bike show and Build-Off deadline....here it is. Meet the LixBMX 'RAWR' Custom Pro...

Thanks man, it's gonna make me re-think future builds too - it feels like I broke through a bit of a preconceived mental barrier with this one. I've realised a lot of future possibilities... and man, it was so fun getting wildly creative with this thing.

Thanks for the photography props smile

Yeah, the Hawks did the damn thang!  I know I gave you props on one of your other builds, but you got all quintessentially artistic on this one.  What vision and execution!

Hey its Prince Harry on the mic                  JK

Great build.  Love the "Heat Treatment" look on the frame/fork and bars.

Those Coca Cola color pedals are cool too.  When I saw the release of the Odyssey Twisted Pedals in Rootbeer color I wanted to build a bike around those.

Would like to see the bike with a straight seat post though.  I think it would give it a more classic look, but that's just my opinion.  Hey you won an award with it.  CONGRATS!

Re: 1980 Toowoomba Bicycle Company Cobra Pro

Cheers Andrew!

I wanted the Root beer coloured Twisted pedals initially (they're so rad!)but they're so hard to get hold of for less than a million bucks these days being ltd ed. n'all. I was stoked when I found the transparent 'Cola' PC platforms from Carbon Cycles - they're beeeaaautiful - love 'em. smile

I toyed with the idea of a straight seat post for a while, I might change it up one day, but for now I'm digging the layback.

The moment I saw this bike I realized you have completely taken your artistic expression to a whole new level - The metal just became another medium, transformed & manipulated in ways canvas cannot ... don't want it to sound corny, but I'm proud and happy for you all at the same time as I sit back in awe of your creativity.

You never cease to amaze . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Aww, shucks Chris, you're so kind bro. Thank you!! :big_smile

It really felt like I shifted a gear with this build... like you mentioned, I kind of started seeing the frame the way I would see a canvas and lost all my pre-conceptions and adherence to any old school rules.

I'm dying to show you the finished Magician! That pink is so hard to photograph.... haha, I'm still trying to get some decent pics of it. It goes nuts in the sunshine looking like anything from pastel pink to maroon... ?! :p Gonna try a shoot in the shade to see if that's better when we get a good day for it.
