New Jersey BMX Track History

I once wrote this down but Ill try to do this from memory.
Each of these towns had at least one BMX sanctioned track.

1. Vineland, NJ - NBA,NBL,ABA (home to Langleys and Pedalers East, opened in 77)
2. Millville, NJ - NBL (home to AER, opened in 76)
3. Howell, NJ - NBL (behind Bicycle World)
4. Craigmuer, NJ - NBA (home to NBA East Coast Nationals, opened in 78)
5. Woodbury, NJ - ABA  (home to Action Wheels, opened in 81)
6. Waretown, NJ - ABA  (off Rt 9 below Howell, opened in 81)
7. Lakewood,NJ (Red Pony Indoor Track, opened in 81)
8. Jersey City, NJ - NBL? (Armory Indoor Track)
9. North Bergen, NJ - ABA (James J. Bradock Park, named after the fighter in "Cinderella Man")
10. Oakland, NJ - NBA , WWBMXA
11. Egg Harbor, NJ - ABA, NBL (Originally known as Bargaintown BMX when it was ABA. Nationals have been held at this track)
12. Deptford, NJ - ABA (Nationals were held at this track)
13. Mullica Hill, NJ - NBL (Nationals were held at this track, opened 1991?)
14. Titon Falls, NJ - NBL (Monmouth BMX , in the sand, opened 1979)
15. Flemington, NJ - NBL (Petes BMX, a 2 lap circle track, open 1979-80)
16. Hunterdon County, NJ - NBL Hundertdon Library, moved from Petes in 81)
17. Lawrenceville, NJ - NBL (PBA, my home track and home to Nationals, opened in 79, TO was Marty Wolfgang)
18. Pequannock , NJ - NBA
19. Wayne, NJ - NBA (Rt. 23 1980-81 Friday Nights Indoors.  TO was Jeff Platt)
20. Englishtown, NJ - WWBMXAA
21. West Milford, NJ - ABA (Lake Melody)
22. Vernon Valley, NJ - WWBMXA (Ski resort held a one time national)
23. Great Meadows, NJ - WWBMXA (Island Dragway)
24. Secaucaus, NJ - ABA (90's track, had a Pro section)
25. Clayton, NJ - ABA (Legend Valley Raceway)
26. Toms River, NJ - ABA (80's track)
27. Brigantine, NJ - ABA (80's track, see photo in this thread. Thanks Brian Shute)
28. Egg Harbor, NJ - ABA  (80s Indoor track raced one or two seasons, designed by Rich Farside)
29. Cape May Courthouse, NJ - ABA (80's track , exact years unknown)
30. Ridgefield, NJ - NBL (Overpeck Park)
31. Teaneck, NJ - ABA? (1980-? Votee Park, TO was Freddie Green)
32. Kinnelon, NJ - ABA or WWBMXA I think (early 80's, Indoor on Tennis Courts, TO was Ron Vigneri)
33. Flemington, NJ - Unsanctioned (early or mid 80s. Behind YMCA. I saw the remnants of the track in 88)

I know there were a few others I never got to race, including some of the newest ones. Some of the tracks have changed sanctions over the years. I did this from memory, so corrections may be in order.

Thanks to contributions by Walter Holda, Greg Mazuy, Brian Shute and Brad Dalbec
and to endlessmikeloobs, Jamming69, Dave Dechert and any others I may have missed

Ok now we are just missing one that I know of. It was in South Jersey and ran ABA in the mid 80s. It was near Williamstown (that may have been the town, Im not sure) I never raced that track or saw it but I did see pictures of it being raced.

Re: New Jersey BMX Track History

Yeah I raced Deptford is that you Tommy Donahue? Here you(Mr. Hutch) and I (#4) are hanging out at Deptford in 1989 with Jimmy Phelps (Phelps Main Connection) and Erik Reidesel. Photo by the legendary icon of NJ BMX, Dave Kapigian.

FYI I raced Millville, Vineland, Lawrenceville (which I helped build kinda), Howell, Braddock, Red Pony Indoor, Bargaintown, the Armory, Flemington, Monmouth, Waretown, Woodbury (78-81) and Deptford (88-90). I raced both NBL and ABA till 81. In 81 and after only ABA. I didnt race any of the NBA  or WWBMXA tracks BITD though I did see Craigmeur in 79.

Hey Racer,

It's not Tom but I know him and Dave K. Tom and I went to a couple of nationals together w/ his mom and my family. I've raced against both of them in the same class. I think Tom is a year or two older than I am. I think Dave started racing when my brothers and I were "on the way out" of racing. Last time we raced, Mr. Poore and T.J. Taylor's dad were running the track..I think..I'll try to find some pics. What's your name? Maybe I'll remember you....

Re: New Jersey BMX Track History

My signature has my name smile I think Tommydone who posted above is Tommy Donahue. Note the AW sticker on my plate, that was 89 before the new uniforms. I spot a AW rider on the gate but dont recognize him, dont think its Clay or Dave or TJ maybe its Brian Shute or someone else from the team I didnt get to know.
I was on Action Wheels and designed the uniforms you probably didnt see as you left just before they came out. I moved back to NJ in late 88 so I raced Deptford a bit in 88-90. The new jerseys we got sometime in 89 or 90. When I raced Deptford TJs dad ran it, along with Mr. Yeomans. Oh and that lady from Vineland, whos son raced (names on the tip of my tounge. Mrs. Vickers?, son Brian? (not the Toyota Nascar Legend).
I'm in the picture above at Deptford so youd probably remember those rock star jeans I raced in lol, if you knew me BITD. You probably left just as I moved back. I was the fastest guy ever in NJ, just ask me. Just guys like Dave Thomson and Clay Goldsmid and my other teammates were afraid to race crusier. Well thats my story and Im sticking to it. Me and Clay went on to start Hyper.

Re: New Jersey BMX Track History

Hey Erick,

My bad on the name...I remember Clay, Dave, and Brian Schute. I think they're a little older than me. You're probably right on the time frame. When I raced, Tom D. had a Zeronine frame. Here's a funny pic from an ABA national in PA. It was after the mains and my father wanted a group shot of the riders from Deptford. Well Clay was just a tad bit late. I'm the one w/ the Redline jersey and Clay actually is somewhat covering Tom D. -

Scott D., Mr. Peterson, Kenny B., one of my 'lil bros who took of his AW jersey, me (sitting), Tom D., and Clay.

Re: New Jersey BMX Track History

Yeah that picture was taken before I moved back probably, maybe 87 or 88. Here is a Action Wheels jersey timeline.
I'm in the first two pictures. The white jersey had blue lettering and orange stripe on the sleeves I think. The last version I designed. Thats super model Dave Kapigian wearing it. The scale got tweaked a bit by the printing company but it still looked ok. I dont have any of my old jerseys anymore sad
