Bike for an 8 year old?

I want to get a bike for my wife's son who will be coming from the Philippines to live with us. I'm thinking if I get him a bike and some cool clothes that will get him of to a good start in the neighborhood. So my question for you guys is what would be a good size bike for an 8 year old? Hes around      4'6". I would like to find him a good used bike or put one together with used parts. Give me some feedback guys on what size frame TT,wheels, cranks I should be searching for?

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

i found my girlfriends kid a complete stock 2000 robinson sst , we been building it together he loves it. he received  it when he was 8 and he just turned 9 yrs old.  he wanted the gt profile cranks   that was the last piece of puzzle for his happiness now he's ready to ride and show it off to his buddies

i'm sick of people lowballing and changing their mind after the details of item were given then asking for money off  or refund .  now all items are sold as is no returns ask all questions before dibbing .

I viewed, but I had to find a comment I told someone else...So here it is.

crank arm sizes go off the inseam of your pant leg. buy chain rings and either flip flop hubs or something cassette or with cogs so you can easily play with the gearing for him. otherwise it's a headache. Go to the local track, check out the sizes of the bikes of the boys in his class/size. Frame length, stem reach and handle bar height are important too, so bring a pencil and paper...or, text yourself. lol, GOOD LUCK!

Mind you, he doesn't have to start racing but that's a good place to start checking out your options for sizes and such if your local bike shop doesn't stock a decent selection of kids bikes...

Get to pedaling...

Tryin' to get my post count up...

LOOKING TO BUY;
Profile seat post clamp from the mid school...Red 1", Profile Gator Seat,  Profile GAS Pedals,  JP buzsaw chain tensioners Black, Solid REEL sprocket 30t Prefer Blue, but open to other colors as well.

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

I just don't like how kids need to have certain clothes or a type of bike just to get a good start. I realize that's just the way it is in our society but it really shouldn't matter that's all.

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

To get back to your original question, definitely something 20" that way he'll be able to ride it as he grows. Something new school may be the way to go in trying to impress other kids. An old school bike may only impress and attract the 40 yearolds in the neighborhood.

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

This is my 9 year olds Hoffman 18" I bought it complete it is a 2009 and bought it 2010 for a great deal. It still fits him well, and I believe getting too big a bike, does little to add to the enjoyment of riding.

Might I add you check the thread titled looking into an 18 for my kid or something along those lines.

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

Wait for him to show up, then you can size it better and he can pick the parts.
He might like building the bike with you..

Re: Bike for an 8 year old?

Good info rolling in guys. As far as racing goes idk. Not right away I guess. Im thinking street for now. Under 500$. You all agree on 20s with 19'' TT? What companys and frame models do you suggest? Im not set on 20s but i would like this bike to last a couple years. I dont want to stunt his ability to learn new tricks though.
