GW Elite Series Pro XL Build Thread (BMX Addicts).

Okay...  Let's call this one "Soft Crossover to the dark side".

Back in 2011, I had the opportunity to follow the UCI Elite BMX series that took place in  Copenhagen (Denmark) and I was blown away by the level of competition (Not only on the mens side, but also, and more so, on the women)...

It was the very first time I heard of fellow country folks competing in this series so I decided to stick to it to follow the progress of a Colombian girl by the name of Mariana Pajon; to my surprise, doing some research about her, I found out she has had a true golden BMX carrier that so many BMX'ers spend their whole lives to accomplish...   She, at age 21, has 14 World Titles, Several Panamerican titles, the 2011 UCI Elite women championship and more recently, the Gold Medal at the 2012 Olympics...  Needless to say, AUTOMATIC FAN (And why not, some sort of a pedofile-ish crush tongue )...

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/juanrmattos/Marianaaaaaaaa_zpsad95020a.jpg

So, to make this shorter...
It caught my attention that most of the competitors from my country were using a frame branded GW Elite Series and I immediately wondered why would it take to get one of those to build a New School race bike (Finally)...  When I first found their page I have to recognize I was blown away, this brand not only covers BMX but is also very strong within South America with their MTB and Road lines, as a matter of fact they carry one the biggest and most popular Shimano professional teams down there....

Wrote about a dozen emails to Mateo (The owner of Bicletas GW) in Medellin and after some dramatic conversations, finally convinced him to allow me to bring a hand full of these into the States.

Originally wanted a Blue set but it was not available in my size, so I settled for a Black / Silver / White

Working on the front end...

May not keep the stem, I wanted to stay as close as posible with a single brand, but this sucker weighs almost as much as the fork!!!

I met her in  South Park and I have an awesome jumoping shot of her. I work with a few colombians and they had no idea who she was until I told them, like you they became instant fans. Will find the pic when I get home

Re: GW Elite Series Pro XL Build Thread (BMX Addicts).

And wasn't it a Columbian who had a bad start but went from 8th to 3rd in the men's Olympic medal run? It was fun to watch Maris pedal in mid-flight, but I was more awestruck with that 3rd place effort. cool

FWIW, that looks like a modified Speed frame, perhaps coming from the same factory. Nothing against that, as I think the Speed frames were very nice and never went viral b/c of a missed price point with the packaged deal and 20mil axles.

Re: GW Elite Series Pro XL Build Thread (BMX Addicts).

That's a cool looking frame.  This is the first I've heard about them.  I like the parts you've got for it so far and am eager to see the finished product.

And that's a great shot of Mariana catching some huge air, no wonder she's a 14 time world champion (they need to update that GW advertisement).  Well done!  cool

That would be Carlos Mario Oquendo, London Bronze medal.

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/juanrmattos/2012%20USA%20BMX%20Disney%20Cup%20Finals/DSC06122.jpg

There was also another Colombian rider with a better career record than Oquendo, but he fell on two of his three motos, his name is Andres Jimenez.

This frame is way off in geometry when compared to the Intense, it also weighs a lot less, yet the rollo-formed alloy on the top tube kinda looks like it smile

Here is a photo of my Fan display tongue

http://i294.photobucket.com/albums/mm82/juanrmattos/BMX%20PARTS/DSC08544_zpse1a1703e.jpg

It has the Official UCI Elite plate signed by Mariana Pajon and Carlos Oquendo at Interbike 2012, A couple tickets for the UK BMX Olympic finals (Which were impossible to find for any money during the event), along with the Olympic BMX pin AND The sanctioned Colombian Team jersey...  This last was given to me by a rider named Miguel Calixto at the 2012 Disney Fall Nationals right after he dislocated his wrist falling at the gate drop (Tough fall, It hurts just looking at the rip).
