What were the first type of Brakes (caliper & Levers)used in freestyle
I am doing an early 84 Hutch Trick Star and want the bike to be period correct. I need to know what were the better Calipers and Levers used back then for the Front and rear on freestyle bikes. Any one have some of the set - ups used by the Pro's back then 1983 - 84 -85

Re: What were the first type of Brakes (caliper & Levers)used in freestyle
Tech 5s not til late-late 85-early 86. ACS Tangents are also known as 860s and not til late 87-88.

Re: What were the first type of Brakes (caliper & Levers)used in freestyle
Tech 3's or Tech 4's are the way to go for your early trick star.
Tech 5's were late 85 (mainly seen in 86),
Tech 6's were mainly late 85 / 86 .. onto 88 etc.
Tech 7's came out in late 86...1987... and on.

Re: What were the first type of Brakes (caliper & Levers)used in freestyle
MX 900s or 1000s. Some people used to use mountain bike levers, thats where the Tech 7 and ACS got the idea for BMX....they were stronger for the abuse dished out in Freestyle. That being said ACS was first, and they had the locking levers first.

Re: What were the first type of Brakes (caliper & Levers)used in freestyle
I had an '89 GT Performer BITD -- my first really 'good' bike, after a few Vagabonds and Bobcats. They came with tangent levers and 860 calipers, and I just recall the arms flexing so badly that I was destroying tires from brake pads coming into contact with them. It didn't matter about tightening the exterior nuts: in order to eliminate or reduce flex, I had to tighten the nuts to the point where there was no freedom of movement. The springs were lousy, and the adjusters were inferior to Dia-compes.
Terrible in every way. But that's just me.
