Midschool help!!!
Hey people. Im an old school bmxer and seriously know nothing bout threadless headsets. I have a 98 redline fs880 i wanna ride this spring. The forks are monster forks and have the spider web screw thing inside them. Assuming that is what holds it together. Anyways i wanna run a front brake but need to know what headset to use so i can run potts mod?? If that is even possible? Im also going to be using a gyro. I believe its 1 1/8 size. Anyways if you guys could offer some opinions on the proper headset to get id greatly appreciate it!
Thanks
in need of : 88 RL 600 CXL, 1990-94 REDLINE DECALS, REDLINE CRUISER, STANTON METH BARS, 86/87 or 88 REDLINE 20a

Re: Midschool help!!!
It's so easy it's not funny. With a threadless fork, you have a wide, open 1" diameter hole right down the middle of the forks. No problem to run a cable through there. I mean, most people run a cap and star nut, but no worries...they make 'em for a cable to go through.

Re: Midschool help!!!
Okay, the "spider web" thing is a start nut. You may have to knock it out of the bottom. When you assemble a threadless fork, you use that to pull down on the stem to make everything snug. I guess it's sort of a safety device, but the system will work without it. You will probably have to get a different star nut/cap that you can put a cable through.

Re: Midschool help!!!
Not really a good picture, but you can see the cable running right through the top cap. In my case, I don't have a star nut rather a flexible gland in the hole.

You need one of these or similar: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Black-Ops-Top-C … 6971003%26
Then any 1 1/8 headset will work.

Re: Midschool help!!!
I once bought a bike that the seller told me "the headset is shot". Turns out he cranked down on the preload (the bolt on top). I simply adjusted the headset correctly, and all was good.
To make a short story long, adjust the bearings with the bolt on top of your stem (where the wedge bolt used to be)
Then, tighten the side bolts on your stem. Your stem is now the "locknut".
Hope his helps.

Any star nut and cap you can find with a hollow bolt will do the job. They aren't a highly stressed component, they just set the bearing pre-load then the clamp on stem takes all the abuse.
An FSA pig headset will probably be the easiest to find, they're strong and come in sealed or unsealed bearing. They do come with a star nut and cap but it's a standard type, not pott's.

You'll be fine with whatever fits your budget. Just don't buy the cheapest.
Either take it to a trusted mechanic to press in the cups and crown race, or message me and I can tell you how to build a press out of hardware store parts.

Re: Midschool help!!!
Cool. I have one of each on the way for three of my midschool bikes and I have one on my 96 Dirt Bike that will not have a front brake. It is a good and affordable headset with a clean look. I would love to have a Chris King, but I have better things to waste my money on that a headset.

Re: Midschool help!!!
Maybe a few headset spacers to adjust the height of the stem unless you would rather cut the steer tube of the fork. Spacers are available in different sizes and colors.
Some of the new school headsets have taller top caps that eliminate the need for as many spacers.

Re: Midschool help!!!
I never saw the D-cup sets on Dans, I'll probably order a couple of those too.
Immortal, you'll probably need about 10mm (3/8") of spacers to run a Gyro, then when you're putting it all together have your fingers crossed that the steerer is long enough.

Ok. Will it help that the 98 redline fx 880 comes with special attachments on the head tube that is there specificaly for the gyro? The previous owner had one on it as well. But I will also grab the spacers too

Re: Midschool help!!!
I had a look at some pics and I think the built in tabs will help but you'll probably still need at least a 5mm spacer, get a couple of them just to be sure.
It depends a lot on how you like your brakes set up. If you don't have enough spacers the rotor will hit the top plate before your brakes work. The only way to work it out is to put it all together and see what happens, add another spacer under the Gyro top plate if needed.
