Repaint or leave OG
Just had a question, Would you restore this or polish it up, decals are cracked pretty good, I am on the fence on which way to go

Re: Repaint or leave OG
I would take it apart, clean and re-grease everything, soak the chain in vinegar to get rid of the rust, then oil it, put it all back together and leave it alone.
FYI - bleach will eat your pedals, soak them in peroxide on a sunny day or just leave them as they are.
If you'd rather have a showroom nice bike, I'd bet some member on here would trade with you a bike either in serious need of a refinish or one that's already been done. It's only original finish once.

I would replace the tires, though. Nothing else.

Re: Repaint or leave OG
If you want to build it as a carpet queen, restore it. If you're interested in riding it, just clean it as good as possible and go from there. OR sell this one and buy one someone has already redone. These are a dime a dozen really.

Re: Repaint or leave OG
If your keeping it - then decide what suits you best
If you plan to sell it - then leave it up to the next guy, that way there's no arguement as to its true structural condition ------ buying an already redone frameset involves allot of trust - I usually wouldn't chance my money on it, even if the person is a know player in the hobby (hell I trust them the least)

Ouch!!!
I would take it apart, get some rubbing compound and an orbital buffer. Go over the paint and decals a few times and buff it out, see what shape they come out. I have brought back to life paint in worse shape with some Turtle wax fine rubbing compound. If it looks good enough for you...

Re: Repaint or leave OG
You are not alone. Same bike same condition.

This bike has tons of scratches and everything's broken. I am going to give it a nice clean up and then toss on a bunch of random parts i already own like the photo above. And i am going to love it and it cost me just about nothing. I promise you that after a clean up that area by the rear brake will be a perfect 10 white.
A good clean up can happen in a day or a weekend and cost you nothing.
A good resto is like 1/2 a year process. LOL And will cost you lots more.
Good luck.

Re: Repaint or leave OG
I might be able to get a Hutch Windstyler that sounds like its about the same. Leave it or refinish? The paint is white so stuff would really show up. What does everyone think?

+1 on both counts. If you put some time and elbow grease into it you will be proud to say its original. Trust me. Look at some of the POS'S that I picked up and restored. I have way more pride in these than any other carpet queen. Clean it first. Then make that decision.
Dime a dozen or not......it's still a cool bike! ![]()
"First of all Rat, you never let on how much you like a girl. "Oh, Debbie. Hi." Two, you always call the shots. "Kiss me. You won't regret it." Now three, act like wherever you are, that's the place to be. "Isn't this great?" Four, when ordering food, you find out what she wants, then order for the both of you. It's a classy move. "Now, the lady will have the linguini and white clam sauce, and a Coke with no ice." And five, now this is the most important, Rat. When it comes down to making out, whenever possible, put on side one of Led Zeppelin IV."

Re: Repaint or leave OG
If selling, just clean it up and let the buyer decide on re finishing. Don't expect to double your money just because you re-finished it, like many people here seem to think. Thinking that you'll get the cost of re-finishing and some never happens. OG always gets the most loot.
If keeping it, do what you want.

Re: Repaint or leave OG
Someone mentioned a Hutch Windstyler, I ended up restoring this one, bunch of money and time, all said and done when I went to ride it my heals would hit the freestyle extensions off the rear triangle, so as a rider it became useless.

Yep the WindStyler was me, I confirmed a trade deal since then and its mine soon!
Is yours a first year ('85)? I guess they moved the rear standers back a bit after that problem came up. I dont have very big feet anyway so it shouldnt be an issue. Yours looks greats after the resto! ![]()

Re: Repaint or leave OG
Clean it up and amaze yourself but also get some tires. Battle scars should ride with pride.
...and a couple?'s......tough to tell in pick but are those redline rear standers? if so you could get a RL for em or sell em and get some GT standers-
...and secondly, is that an 88 stem or did those come on 87's as well?
You've just been Thunder Moosed!
