Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

We all know 20inch bikes require are high skill set being ridge, small, fast, and they will punish noob riders.

She can "ride a bike" but doesnt ride, she has a cross over MTB with a front shock.

Im thinking more along the lines of a cruiser or a 26inch dj with a front shock.

Id like for her to come out and she is eager to learn how to bunny+ small pump track jumps. She is not going to be doing anything big, just enough for her to get enjoyment. Trying to get her feet wet, she did great just getting the courage to ride around rays MTB park. I talked her out of renting a 20inch and forced her onto a 29nder with a shock....Worried she was going to spill hard.

But the problems she caught sight of a day glow pink 80s bike and is in love lol.

Now I have a couple frame sets to build her, but im kinda want her on a 26inch DJ with a shock so she doesnt kill her self.

Again were talking small pump track and mini table tops. Nothing big!

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

I have a complete black market riot that id like to powder coat. Someone gave up on rawing the bike:rolleyes: So the forks bars, stem are raw but the frame is white along with nice white wheels.

I was thinking of doing it a 80s neon pink or something...

Then theres the GT alum speed series frame(2000ish?) that needs powder:P

I can't understand why anyone would want an old, scratched up, dirty, dusty bike, when you could go and buy a brand new shiny one.

My wife didn't like her schwinn ladies beach cruiser after riding my big ripper
So I had to buy her one too. Craigslist 400$ not a bad bike for the $
Just a thought

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

another thought is get a big 24" like a mid school redline pl 24 (22" top tube) not too expensive, comfortable, and still has a small bike feel to it. (compared to a 26 or 29)

I would hook her up with whatever she shows the most interest in. Also, I am jealous you have a GF that wants to ride BMX. I need to find one of those. My last GF wanted a freaking cruiser with a basket and a horn.

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

In the past 5 years, my wife has ridden nearly all my bikes (20" GTs, Hutches, Kuwis, etc, 24" CW, PL-24, Robi, Skyway, etc).  She doesn't like riding ANY of them.  She would much rather rider her more-upright Cannondale hybrid for cruisin or her Fuji road bike for exercise.  BMX geometry is not for everybody.

Get her a 20. My wife rides an 87 Decade and has no issues ever.
For that matter my 7 y.o. daughter rides a 20" Robinson with no problems.

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

I built my wife a FBM Bitchin' Camaro, but she ended up not liking the 20" for long rides. So then I built her up a Standard 125R cruiser that she loved. Now she is on a Sunday Model-C, but she has not ridden yet thanks to winter weather.

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

20" bikes were made for kids, with a bit of practice they not exactly difficult to ride are they. And a lot less further than from a 26. Sounds to me like you are worried that she will out do you in no time on the tricks front, so give her a big bike so she can't????? Just saying..

And a lot less further to fall from than a 26 it should have said.

A sight for sore eyes to the blind would be awful majestic. It would be the most beautiful thing that they ever had seen. It would cause such surprise, it would make all of their minds electric. How could anyone tell them that some things are not what they seem?

Re: Girlfriend has asked for a Bmx bike but should she be on a 20inch?

My wife went for a few rides on a 2000 Dyno Zone 20" I had put together - it was ok for short rides, but she wasn't comfortable on it for longer rides.

She ended up getting a 24" MTBish Rallye on clearance and loves it.

The best bike for her is one she'll ride.

For everyday and exercise this is what she likes her Giant Roam 2

Its very comfortable! But she wants something she can do small stuff with. This would be her 2nd bike not her exercise/daily bike.

Not really im thinking something with larger wheels will be better for her to control.

My 26inch dirt jump mtb is super easy to ride and jump. Its very stable in the air, my 20inch is great but when riding both. The 20 really moves with you and goes were you point it, thats a good and bad thing at the same time. Im just thinking a cruiser would be a bit better for her.......

A. They are fast to peddle around town

B.Larger wheels=stable over rough surface

C. Alot more stable in the air

Like she just learned how to go down a roll in, not a a quarter but a roll in. She was scared but worked her way up to it.....Im not forcing anything on her. I just think a 20 might be to twitchy.
