Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever

Just curious if anyone has bought either one of these items. Both are priced very affordable compared to the other options available, but look as cheaply made as the price. I know this is an attempt to bring a few back to using brakes by making brake adjustment easier, but would any of you run these on your bike. I ask because I am about to order a 22" Holmes and have most everything I need to assemble it except for brakes and bars. I am cheap to a point, but usually limit my cheapness to looking for the cheapest price of items I trust. However, I am to a point where I want to finish this bike as quickly as possible where I can see if it lives up to the hype. I guess I am curious to see what others would do, buy and try or wait and save for a product you know and trust. I know brakeless is the in thing, but I perfer to have brakes and not have to worry about getting ran over by a truck or car.![]()

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
The lever looks ok.. cheap, but really how much a lever should be, even the M2's.
I like adjustments, like tension on the arms. Sometimes the wheel can't be centered between the mounts perfectly.
seriously? why didn't they just make both out of plastic?

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
RDB, thank you. Not sure how I missed that post. The brake looks beefier than the pics on Dans Comp. blueep3piece, I'm leaning that way, but may end up getting the caliper as a quick fix until I decide what I really want and can afford a higher priced caliper.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
I went back and forth between the Springfield, the new Fly brakes (45 bucks) and the EVO brakes.
Money is tight but I also just wanted to check these things out. As much as I am a brake whore, I was curious about these things.
It comes with two springs. I like a little less tension on my brakes so I'm going to stretch the spring and see how it feels.
The pads are weird but seem to work. I had planned to swap the pads out with some better ones that I have anyways.
Personally, I think they look bad. I like my brakes to look sleek and sexy, but they do work. are easy to set up. (as if brakes are hard to set up, I could do it blind and drunk, with a gyro).
the lever though, no way. Tech 77 for life! ![]()

To me, they look like they will work fine but over time that spring will lose its tension...
I would go with this over a Tektro or something in the same $ range just to try it out...

Is there no way to edit posts on this board?
I wanted to say this too.
As a brake whore, I like my cable hanger to be a quality one, not the cheapy thing that comes with the Springfield brakes.
I can't use their quick slic cable without the lever knarp (lame) and cutting my frame, or I'd go that route.
Buying a nice cable hanger adds to the cost. Dans has EVO brakes on sale for 30 bucks and probably free shipping.
I mention the cable hanger because the above link shows a nicer hanger than comes with the springfield brakes. (incase you didn't read the review, but just looked at the pretty pics.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
Hombres come with old pads that don't work on todays colored rims. Unless they have made a change to the pad compound but they don't mention that so I"m guessing they didn't.
Did I mention I had a spreadsheet when I was looking at brakes? ![]()

I'm not paying 20 bucks just to edit my posts. I could use that money on a set of brakes. ![]()
The other reason I went with the Springields is, I wanted to try something new. I've owned many pairs of 990's and hombres.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
I too can be a brake whore. It's the poser in me that won't die.
Hombres are okay and I have a set on my cruiser, but I hate the green pads and adjustment nuts.
The $30 Evo IIs are the leftover special colors. I have the pomegranate ones on my Cam Wood V2. I would want a matching lever if I went with any color, but none of the colors will fit my mental picture of this bike. I had a set of Demolition brakes and loved the braided cable and hanger design more than the Evo IIs.
After reading the review (Yes, I am from Alabama and can read), I did read the comment about the cheap cable hanger.
The brake does not look as cheap as I thought it did, but still not as "sexy" as I would like.
I also looked at the Fly bike version, but why pay more for the same gimmick.
The weird pads are shaped with built in toe-in. Another idea to make the installion easier.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
The Springfields that come on the Sunday completes at the bike shop feel pretty good. Definately a decent brake for the money. But if you picky about spring tension, you might want to look for different brakes.
Although I am far too OCD when it comes to my brakes, so I use some Fly brakes.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
Wanting to have an all black look on the Holmes with out going "murdered out" by throwing a few non black parts on it. I have a set of raw Profiles and a black Redneck XLT collecting dust waiting for my next project. I am going to borrow the Tech 77 lever from my cruiser amd have made a deal on some black Slams. I need to check, but I think I have a polished 25T sprocket and I am thinking about a nickle Madera clamp.

Misread the AKO (allen key only) part of the decription. I read that last night around 3AM when I could not sleep. I just noticed they looked different and only come in black, but two choices of pads.

Re: Odyssey's new Springfield brake and lever
You could always pick up some of the close-out colored Evo 2's and paint them.
I had some Demolitions that were white (gross) that I painted black and used on my wife's Model-C.

I'm picky about my brakes. once the EVOs came out they kind of set the standard.
