There is a reference section here that is very nice. Please take time to at least try to figure out what the heck you are wanting to buy or sell.
We are getting soo many members that are upset when they buy a round seatpost clamp that is a $5 mongoose clamp thinking it is a Magnesium 1st gen Hutch clamp for $20. Or some freakin' Windstyler bars as Mike D's or Buff bars.

Please try to know WTF you are buying or selling. If you are not sure PLEASE contact a staff member. We WILL help you.

The reference section is overlooked by most members. Just click on "Forums" on the left of the screen and scroll all the way down. SOOOO much awesome info it is crazy! And if you can add info GREAT!

DO NOT comment stupid things like "I had one of these" OR "I want one of these" in the reference section. You will get a warning for this.

Just try to figure it out before crying about getting screwed. Most the time you were not screwed, you were stupid.

There is a "rash" of misslabeled handlebars for sale in the forums.
I feel sorry for those paying top dollar for exel ladder bars thinking they are the older types.

Good thing I already know what's what. However many others do not. Good info to research prior, but just like most people, newbies (or long-term) might always want the quick answer and thus the misinformation.

That was a very good mass message, I have only been a member here for a short time but I have been visiting the museum for about 6 years now! I have a vast knowledge of the history and in no way shape of form would I ever get caught buying a set windstyler bars, thinking there Mike D bars! I think it falls on both ends...just be careful.

There have been some really good deals here. I wouldn't be surprised if a 1st gen whatever did pop up for $20. Just saying, on behalf of my "idiot" pile, sellers have to stop using, e.g., "Hutch" for any 'ol generic thing. The reference section is helpful, but lets face it, it can't cover everything. Add in all the knock-offs going around and it's getting harder and harder to not get scammed. Don't get me wrong. I love this place, but I can see why there's frustration.

It's kinda funny too when members tell you, "I know this is the date of my bike because there's another one on the museum with that date".
They believe the Mod's are verifying all the Dates of the 200,000 or so bikes on the museum as they are submitted...

I estimate at least 30% have the wrong date, especially the mid-school ones. It's still better to be on there than not -but people gotta realize that a lot are best guesses (some are just way wrong guesses).

That being said Rob, what year do the mods want listed -the stamped production date or the model year date?
Example - GE bikes stamped with the last 2 to even 6 months of the year were often actually for the next 'model year'. Kind of like cars.
So a 1097 date is really a 1998 bike.
