36 H Hub, 48 H Rim. Can that work?

Can you lace a 36 hole hub and 48 hole rim? Lace and true. I know there will be unused holes.

I myself have never built a wheel. But I asked my friend and bike shop owner (yes you sparked my curiousity also), and he says he does'nt know he's never tried. Nor does he want to. I gotta think that it could be laced as you still have a even number of holes. I would think truing would be difficult. But again this is just me thinking. As I've never built a wheel.
