1984 Pro Performer ??

Below is my Pro Performer I bought new from Action Wheels BMX Shop in Woodbury, NJ back in the early 80's.

I have been searching around here for information but it seems to stop at 1985 for GT Pro Performers.

The serial number is 4841794 with FS.....which I think means April 1984 #1794 ???

Any help or information about it ?  how many made?  is it rare ?  I am just curious as from what I remember it was one of the 1st frame and forks they got in and I built it piece by peice.

Also, since I have held on to this 29 years........the only place this bike is going is on a ride under my son Tim's power.

Thanks,

Scott

Yes....it has GT stamped on the "balogna cut".

Anyone else....?

Also, I'm contemplating restoring it....any thought on that or should I leave it as a survivor?

I'd say that's a personal decision... you've owned that bike for this long, customized it to your liking (or what you liked at that time) and put all those scratches on it yourself, so it may have some sentimental value to you as it sits.... but there is something to be said for a nicely restored show piece too. I also understand that often times bikes (especially white ones) look better in distant pictures than they do in person. Hard call that only you can make... would you enjoy riding it as it sits? If not, restore it.

Great bike.
As far as restoring it, I'm all for survivors so yeah... Keep it as is!

Another vote for keeping it as is, just keep taking good care of it.   cool

Another vote for leaving it as a survivor. If you pull it apart and clean and re grease everything, you would be amazed at how good it looks and how well it rides.

Re: 1984 Pro Performer ??

I could see throwing a set of white Gt Pro bars on there to dial it back in, and clean it up a little.
Some of those have the platform welded a little lower than the 85.  There's one for sale right now you might compare it to.  Just another tid-bit I picked up scrolling through the museum.

Re: 1984 Pro Performer ??

First off, that is a killer bike! Also, if you have had it since it was new, there is no way in hell I would "restore" it. That bike tells a story and to do anything to it other than ride it would be a shame. But to each there own, everyone has an opinion including me tongue. I love my 84 performer, and I ride it hard, bomb stair sets with it, huge bunny hops, you name it. Regardless, that's a sweet ride. cool

PM me if you have some Graveyard parts to get rid of.

Pleeeeeease keep it original and don't "restore" it.  It'll only be original once.

+1 - I'd certainly go this route way before stripping original decals and paint.

As far as the "FS" stamp, in 1984 it may not have been as clearly defined, but you have a USA made frameset.

Since it was sold as F/F ... it may as well be a Pro Performer, Pro World Tour, Pro Freestyle Tour ... but, as you might remember, that was really a distinction of components until late 1986 (practically 1987) when the stamping may have indicated the difference between a Tri-Moly frame and all tubes Cro-Mo ...

Since you build it the way you wanted BITD and the bike still looks good, maybe just a cleanup or "at most" a repair/replace of any non-functional parts.

Just my $.02 ...

smile

Re: 1984 Pro Performer ??

If it were me, going by the pics and depending on the condition i would probably remove that top tube decal and just sand and paint the top tube.
It's white and that is the easiest color to touch up and you'll still keep the sweet og decals and overall look..

If you change your mind the spray paint will still be easy to remove and get it back to the ugly existing top tube smile

I'm guessing the forks have been redone anyways? the decals have at least?
