stem keeps slipping inside steer tube?

I tighten my stem bolt down darn neer as tight as you can tighten it and when I pull my handlebars around when doing freestyle my stem will move off location(twist). It's my 87 old school rider. What the heck?

Re: stem keeps slipping inside steer tube?

Are you using the correct wedge for the stem? May need a new wedge. The bolt may also be bottoming out at the wedge (no more threads) if they are not correct to the stem. Try tightening it outside of the fork and see.

Ok. What about trying to shim the inside of the steer tubes?

I wouldn't recommend it.

It wasn't the original wedge. I also have a differant bolt in there because the original one wasn't potts mod compatible. The new bolt was thicker so the old wedge wouldn't fit. I took the original wedge to a machine shop today and their gonna drill a bigger hole in it and re thread it so it fits on the new bolt. Maybe this will work?

If the drilled and tapped wedge does not work then check the new bolt threads (length of threaded portion) compared to the original bolt.
