BMX why list?
Even though I have loved BMX since I first saw it there are things that til this day I do not know why they are what they are. I know more often than not it all comes down to cost, but perhaps there are other reason.
- Why are the drop-outs on a BMX bike open towards the rear and not forward like on many if not most other bikes?
- Why were integrated seat clamps not the standard like on road bikes?
- Why were such long reach single bolt brake calipers used for so long, and not something that offered far better leverage, like 990s or disks?
- Why if these bikes were made to be used in the dirt, were they ever even made without all sealed bearings?
- Why were BMX seats made with cheap metal hardware instead of the aluminum micro-adjust for so long?
- Why were BMX tires made with"gumwall" or "skinwall"?
- Why would any manufacturers make dirt bikes with open ended tubing allowing mud and dirt in to corrode the bikes?
- Why do stems, with exception to Fish Bone, all extend forward?
- Why are brake cables not concealed in the frame on Freestyle bikes, to get them out of the way and avoid snagging?
- Why is there not more emphasis on aerodynamics in BMX racing?
- Why such crappy relatively heavy seats on BMX bikes for so long even on a $800 Pro-Star?

You can answer some of those questions by reading up on steering and frame geometry. You know, rake, trail, offset, etc.

Why would any manufacturers make dirt bikes with open ended tubing allowing mud and dirt in to corrode the bikes?Cost
Why do stems, with exception to Fish Bone, all extend forward? Proper steering angle....generally, only flatlanders want zero-offset steering
Why are brake cables not concealed in the frame on Freestyle bikes, to get them out of the way and avoid snagging? Production cost...and added difficulty to service
Why is there not more emphasis on aerodynamics in BMX racing? Because they're going 20mph, not 200
Why such crappy relatively heavy seats on BMX bikes for so long even on a $800 Pro-Star What's a Pro Star?
Mostly materials cost and production cost would be the answer....it's easy to look back and say "what were they thinking?" in hindsight, but in it's infancy, BMX was simple and new and folks did not want to add aspects of other bicycle disciplines to muddle it up.

That could be handled by proper frame design or even fork rake....like Mongoose did.

Good answers, I suspected all this much, would like more details if someone has them, but was really kind of hoping that there was more of a method to the madness.

The stem question could be resolved with proper head tube angles and or fork design no need to have a weaker "goose" neck design.
With regard to aerodynamics, even cruising around town I notice a difference when I have a number plate or not. Every little bit counts, I am surprised they don't all wear speed suits......must be the rules, but it makes little sense at an elite level.

Some people are never happy....![]()
Where the music stinks, and they water the drinks, at the nudie bar.
Where the girlies dance in their underpants, at the nudie bar.
Where you see their butt, and their trap stays shut, at the nudie bar.
Where you can’t touch a breast, but you can cave in a chest, at the nudie bar.
Where you look at a thigh, and blacken an eye, at the nudie bar.
Where a buck’s enough to see their stuff, at the nudie bar.
Where the breasts may be fake but man do they shake, at the nudie bar.
Where you swear like a sailor, and wish you could nail her, at the nudie bar.

Because if the manufacturers did all that back then, nobody would buy them. Because they would have been too damn expensive.
So there :p
