Redline PL 20 Restoration -
Hi I know people like to see picture from restoring bikes so I decided to share some ![]()
I am nearly done but like to share some before and after pics.
The bike is currently being assembled - but lets start with how I bought it on the bay. The bike was pretty OG as equipped in the 80s

More pics later on..

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -
here the first pics after I took the bike apart. Everything came apart except the seat post and one pedal..

There is some rust at the seat tube and bottom bracket area. I assume the previous owner stored it not dry..
The plastic bowl is from IKEA. I used it for an OA bath.

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -

This picture was taken after 2 days of OA - I added some dishwasher to get rid of grease..
The bike looked pretty good compared to before but the chrome was definitely damaged in some areas.

one can also see that there are some small dents at the chain stay tubes
..
this was leading to the decision to have the frame, forks, handlebar and the shaft of the stem rechromed

so i took of the decals (which i hardy regret now) and got me a couple of quotes from various chrome shops..
If I knew by that time that the repro decals are too big - too shiny and overall crappy - I might have just cleaned it and left it a survivor..
more to come..

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -
The next things I did was bleaching the Andy Patterson Signature Tuffs. as described in this forum..
I got me some chloride tabs which are intended to be used for swimming pools. The reason was that chlorides in household bleaching products have a too low concentration (at least here in Germany). So I removed the axles and bearings - covered the aluminum parts with tape and bathroom-silicone scrubbed them like hell and bleached them finally. I also covered the Andy Patterson signature not knowing if it would resist
the bath.
The left wheels is cleaned. The right one was bleached.
I bleached the wheels in this red box - in the kitchen - balcony door was open to ventilate..

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -
Check with Ultrahive about his decals. He's moving from New York to Florida this weekend so he might be hard to reach right now, but he'll get his shit straight soon enough.
He's done several sets of decals for me (including 80s Redline), and his quality is far superior to the crap coming out of Redline these days.

Hi Nikiro - just recognized the HAJOS-sticker at the frame...I think that was the main distributor for Redline in germany (Frankfurt) in the 80ies...bought my RL 20 from them in 86....Have fun with your bike- seems like your doing a professional job restoring it!![]()

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -
No PL-20 had mags, its a race bike, you need some Ukai rims on that to make it right. Cranks would be either Sugino 3 pc or one pc. or if outfitted as a Carrera II Flight cranks. Also that bike would have came with black MX-1000 in the rear only.

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -
I am aware that the PL 20 is a race bike - but for some reasons the previous owner added Tuffs .. I think HAJO's sold the PL 20 frame set and one guy added components that don't match the complete bikes
I'll decide later if I keep the mags or not. In any case they are kind of rare and worth being cleaned.. I found NOS rims / tires at the Local Bike Shop in my hometown which I might use . pics tomorrow

While I do not deny that you are right, nobody BITD ran the bike exactly like they got it for long (one of the reasons that I don't build catalog bikes). When guys switch from racing to freestyle, they often just used the bike that they had and put freestyle parts on it. I used to ride vert on my Profile Champ Pro with 7XNs (1.5) and Comp IVs. I'm just sayin'...

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -

I need some help on the decals - I will try to do them on my own at least the one on the main tube and the seat post decals. So I installed Inkscape on my computer and convertedd ann corel draw REDLINE logo into *.svg and created this draft.. the colors are just colors .. not the final design. So I would highly appreciate if a member would measure the dimensions A, B, C, D of the main tube decals of his PL 20 with OE stickers..

Nice effort on this one mate. Are you doing custom coloured decals for it? There's a fella here in Australia doing the ultra rare chainstay decal for the 83/84 PL's.

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -

Boring Saturday... Lacing Time. Had the Araya 7X purchased from a Bike Shop in my Home Town sometime last year. Decided to lace them with sealed SunTour High Flange Hubs (Front NOS in sealed bag) rear hub NOS as well - bag has been opened before. They both spin well even though the grease should be some years old... This is the second time I lace wheels - first time I re-spoked my 500a. Lacing is easy except understanding where to place the first spoke
.. many tutorials are available - just a few encounter the position of the sprocket and the resulting direction of the spokes that need to convert the torque into drag on the rim. Anyways - I did a mistake again and had to correct them...
The same bike shop in my home town also had 3 more NOS Michelin Tyres COBRA in 20 x 1.75 in stock. They are date stamped 86 inside - slightly too young for my bike but I am not a total fanatic..
Now I have to lace the Frontwheel and keep working on the decals...

Re: Redline PL 20 Restoration -

Still undecided if I should do some customizing on the decals. I still don't have the measures from an original set of stickers. Doing something custom style has the risk to make it worse, right? I guess will try to keep em redone as intended by the Redline designer.. my sticker measures 380 mm now and is 40 mm width
