How many of you skateboarded AND rode BMX in the 80's ?

I feel like the two sports were very closely connected during that time period. Witness this magazine cover:

Part of why I'm posting this is because I just posted up a thread about an 80's skateboard documentary, which apparently was promptly removed by the moderators. While I do respect the desire to keep the Catchall board actually about BMX and not other sports . . . . at the same time I think there was enough of a connection for many of bmx freestylers who did both, that it's odd we can't talk about it....

So, what was it like, doing BOTH sports at the same time? I personally remember always having both a bike and skateboard in my Chevy S10 Blazer in high school. I actually skated ramps better than I could ride a bike on them, but I was a much better flatlander than I was a freestyle skater.

never at the same time... when my bike got ripped off I switched exclusively to skateboards

Skated and raced BMX in the 70's,80's and 90's........Still Race,but had to quit skating.Very much connected,sport's for folk's who don't do the team thing.

i used to ride my bike with my skateboard across my bars to the ramp... then ride both...
alot of kids in my area rode their bikes w skateboards attatched somehow..ahhh the good ol days

Still ride both, but ride my bike more these days. Skip the cheaper ones and my first real bike was an 87 Schwinn Predator and my first real skateboard was an 88 Vision Jinx mini. Missed a lot of bike changes/history from 1993-2010 except one poor attempt with a 96 Condor I bought in 2006. My last skateboard purchase was a newer Santa Cruz Eric Dressen this past summer.

skateboard, bmx, and surf pretty much describe what i did for fun growing up. still surfing. skateboarding is history due to too may injuries and trying to get back into riding a freestyle bike.

I have always rode both. I have also played team sports my whole life. My bike and boards spent many hours in the empty locker room.

Always had a ruck sack with my board in it whilst at the park with the bike and would just switch from one to the other. Also spent my whole life playing football and still do, or soccer as you like to call it and still ride....41 years young.....

Stopped riding my bike and rode a board exclusively for my freshman year of high school. That was until some senior snagged it from my locker and rode the halls.
Then I was the 'bad' guy and they banned skateboards at school, so back to the bike.

Still have a skateboard and a bike in my car at all times!! My main requirement of my daily driver is that I can throw my bike in the back without taking anything apart.

+1 I have a skateboard and at least 1 bike in my truck at all times.

I too went back and forth... I had a Dog Town Web board with Gull Wing trucks and Bones wheels. I ended up trading it for a single pump pellet gun and one of those super mini getto blasters...

I rode both back then, and ride both to this day. I actually ride skateboards more than I ride bicycles. But I continue to suck at both!

Me too, when I wasnt racing or jumping, I was on the street pissing off pedestrians! lol Probably 18 to 20 decks worth over 6 years.

yep i skated and rode bikes, sometimes id skate for a while, then id go home and get my bike, I still got one of my boards, I think its a santa cruz, lots of my friends skated, and lots of my friends were into bmx , so I wound up doing both, and enjoyed both. I was much better on my bike though

I started with bmx late 70s and did both for about a year mid 80s and then switched to full time skating.
I was pretty good and beat my body good, knees in particular. Late in highschool I quit skating.
A couple years later went to mountain biking, used to ride to work a lot and trails on weekends.
Had kids, got a career... blah blah... got back into bmx slowly early 2000s
Still into bmx... a little more than before thanks to the internet and this site.

Did both in the late 70's,i use to skate with some guys that were really good and some were factory sponcered skaters,one guy is Mike Palm who stopped skating his senior year in high school and started his band Agent Orange,he was an awesome street skater at the time.His band is still going strong.
