Build Thread - Custom 1987 Dyno 2-Four Freestyle Cruiser
Well here is the build thread for a much anticipated (probably only by me
) project. Taking a 1987 Dyno D-Tour and creating a custom Dyno 2-Four cruiser.
This is going to take a while to complete due to cost, but will be well worth it for me. This will probably be a boring thread to watch as progress will likely be slow. Maybe I'l make this summer's Dyno buildoff or next year's calendar buildoff.
Anyway, here is the subject: '87 Dyno D-Tour frame and an '88 fork. Thanks to Tim (electrongeek) for agreeing on the partial trade and shipping this baby from CA to CT. Serial is DH38729XX stamped on the left rear dropout. I think these frames are 4130 main tubes, but the 4130 decal doesnt say "tubes". Fork is not stamped but is very light, assuming it's chromoly. Nicely spraybombed black over the OG lavendar.

This is a D-Tour, not a Compe, which was critical for me for authenticity's sake. See the end of the T and the end of the r, but just barely.
Another part acquired on a trade deal with Brian P, a stamped Dyno drainpipe seatpost. First as received, and second stripped to check out the logo. "D" and CROMO. Nice!

Stripping begins this weekend, then its off to The Frame Doc to get stretched.
I still need pretzel bars if anybody's holding! ![]()

D-Tours were all cro-mo in '87 to the best of my knowledge. You mind me asking how much this is setting you back? PM me if you don't want to post it here. Cool project.

Re: Build Thread - Custom 1987 Dyno 2-Four Freestyle Cruiser
F/F/SP are stripped! I had to get this done today b/c no way I can get away with working on bikes on Christmas eve ![]()
I used Klean-Strip KS-3 Premium Stripper applied with a brush and scrubbed with stainless steel wool. Apply, scrub, rinse, repeat till paint is gone. I tried the same product in an aerosol can but it didn't work as well as the gel product applied with a brush. Nitrile gloves a must cuz that stuff burns!

Pretzel bars purchased last night from stevenbven and Tim (the framedoc) got back to me so its shipping out after Christmas.
So the question is, do I have the framedoc reduce the height of the pretzel bars or keep them as-is. I have no experience with cruiser bars and although I know they are generally lower than bars for a 20" my instinct says keep them stock...?

I think it depends on your body type and what feels comfortable. I'm 6' 2" 225# and I rode a couple of my buddies 24's this summer.
The first was a newer model Sunday Model C with cruiser bars. Honesty, it felt weird & just couldn't get into it. Not sure if it was the frame or the shallow bars.
The other was one of the new 24" Skyways with normal, "Pro" size bars. That thing felt like a Cadillac! I could've laid back and taken a nap on that one.
It just felt correct.
I have a set of OG pretzel bars and they do kinda feel big on my 20" Dyno.
I say try the stock size out and see how they feel.

Yeah I'm 6'2" @ 210#. This is going to be a bike path with the kids/around town cruiser so I do not want to be hunched over. Pretzels are not terribly high in stock form.

And it's off to the Framedoc for a stretch!!! Sent the bars, post and chainwheel too so he can powder it all when its done.
Now...what color???
I'm going with black parts. Frame was originally lavender, I like lavender and black. Maybe all black and murdered out. Maybe white with black parts would be fresh. Decisions, decisions. I've got time.
