So is sand blasting bad before Powder Coat?
I am getting a PFT ready to have powder coated and I was informed not to sand blast it. I soaked the frame multiple times with stripper and she just dulled. My question is what does blasting it with silica sand do to the metal that messes up the powder coat and or finish?
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Chris

The guy that did my hoops said a light blast will make the powder stick much better. I wasn't sure I wanted him to do it but they turned out great. Just make sure the person blasting it knows what they are doing. Usually the powder guys do it though...its pretty common from what I understand. There are other safer types of blasting material than sand too.

There are other forms of stripping that do not use sand. Walnut, soda, media and a few others....from what I under stand alum parts should not be sand blasted while it's fine for steel.

Yeah I was hesitant to let the guy do my hoops with sand but he said it was a very fine grit and I made a point of it to tell him to go very light. He must of because I can still see a couple real tiny imperfections that were in the rims. But I agree I would rather use something safer...but he knew what he was doing and they came out nice. Thank god because they are pro classes. So anyway if my alloy rims were able to be done than cr-mo steel should be no problem unless the guy is dumb and uses real high pressure with coarse grit. Some other guy told me he took a frame to a body shop he never dealt with and they blasted a hole in his frame!

This is all great info, thanks to all. I'm going to try glass beads tomorrow on the General frame and see how it finishes. Im just having a heck of a time getting the paint off of my GT PFT. They used some good stuff!

What kind of stripper were you using? I use "Aircraft remover" and it takes off any kind of finish. It hasn't met a paint it can't lift off yet.
My SURVIVORS will be worth a fortune because of all of the "restorers" out there
